    cyclcross help

    Hi, last week i had my Boardman Cyclocross stolen. Luckily it was insured. I got my original bike as part of the cycle to work scheme so it pretty much had to be bought at Halfords. I had the CX since about Feb and other than a few teething problems never really had any trouble with it and really enjoyed the bike.
    I will soon be recieving money for a new bike so now im not limited to Halfords. I was just wondering for the same price bracket 950 give or take a small amount either side. Would i be better going elsewhere? Ive had a look at Evans and Leisure lakes and theres quite a few Cyclocrosses around that mark, but when it comes to the spec im useless. I have no problem getting another Boardman but it was my 1st non Mountain bike so i know no better. The bike will be used for my daily commute to work, around 11 miles each way. Mainly on road with minor off road. I want to stick with a cyclocross and dont want a road bike.

    Also it was stolen as i quickly went in to a shop in the city centre. I now know the combination lock i had wasnt of much use. I wont be doing that again. Are D-Locks the way forward?. Not that i'll be leaving this one!

    The link didn't work for me, so I didn't see what model you had. But it looks to me like all three of their cx bikes would be great for commuting. I don't think there's any particular reason to go elsewhere if it's a hassle. If you didn't already, I'd strongly recommend getting fenders and a rack.

    By the way, there are a lot of bikes that aren't exactly cx bikes but are designed for commuting or touring so they're way more durable than pure road bikes and use fatter tires. They all have rack and fender mounts all over. Some are:
    Surly Long Haul Trucker
    Jamis Aurora
    Bianchi Volpe

    And then there are some cx bikes that are actually aimed more at commuting and touring than cx racing. So they have rack and fender mounts and meant to be durable, like:
    Specialized Tricross
    Surly Cross Check
    Trek Crossrip

    But it looks like the one you had is great, especially if you want a racier style.

    Thanks, yeah im still unsure. May still get the same one again but spoilt for choice. Just wish i was more clued up on the spec etc cause i get lost when it gets to that point. Going to have a look at the ones you mentioned now thanks.
    Can you give me a bit more info on fenders and a rack? Sorry, i new to this

    Wherever you get your bike they'll sell versions of these, and they'll be happy to put them on for you. They're both really nice to have for commuting. Some cx bikes that are designed for racing don't have attachment points for these, but it's worth it to find a bike that does. It looks like the Boardman bikes do. The fenders keep water and mud from spraying up your back and in your face. The rack holds bags and things so you don't always have to wear a backpack.

    Specs wise, there isn't much point in getting a super light bike for a lot of commuters, because they're carrying so much weight in stuff anyways-- the weight saved in the frame doesn't end up making a very big difference percentage-wise. Steel commuting bikes are much more popular than steel racing bikes. Still, some commuters travel light and like to ride a light fast bike like those Boardman bikes. You just need to decide what your priorities are.

    I'd say you need to choose how important weight is to you, you need to choose whether you want disc brakes, and you need to choose how aerodynamic a position you like to ride in. Once you choose those, people will give you tons of suggestions!

    So after a lot of time looking at different bikes online, and visiting a few bike shops, i decided to stick to my original Boardman. I joined British cycling and got 10% off. The bright sparks at Halfords some how managed to not have it ready on time twice so i pushed for a further 10% off. So i got a 950 bike for 760 which i was happy with. It looks the same as my old one but after riding it home theres definately something different about it i cant put my finger on it. Anyway im back on the road now so thanks for the advice.
