The bus is £4.50 ($7.50) round-trip for me. I find that quite expensive for a 18km ride (11.2 miles)
So, I need to ride 88 commutes or 1584km to break even on the cost of the bike, lock, lights and cycloputer.
So, I'm half way there

the pubs are quite good ...
i think keeping my transportation costs around zero is a good thing
it is interesting as emotionally I think £4.50 isn't so much but $7.50 is a huge amount.

One local college age man rides one of these every day to the gym; he seems pleased with it. He probably doesn't read BF so is uninformed about the "horrors" of ownership of such a bike.

"BSOs" like this one were mass produced and sold rather cheap back in the days. Before "SS" was hip, this was the default bike. Geared ones were exotic. "Fivespeeders" and "Tenspeeders".

I was surprised to find that my local grocery store stocks bicycle tubes and patch kits, but the tubes all have Dunlop valves! I've never seen them before in the USA!!

Should I be shunned since I keep an eye out for sales on those? If I see one new for 60 and still boxed not built I'm gonna be on it like white on rice.

What do you think is a reasonable cost estimate for the bike? How much would it have cost to replace when you originally had "0" miles/km on it?

I enjoy wrenching and it gives me peace of mind... so I consider it a no loss when I'm working on my own bikes. If I were to replace it now.. a comparable bike would probably be 400-500 new via something like bikes direct. I'll fudge up some numbers later.
