The bus is £4.50 ($7.50) round-trip for me. I find that quite expensive for a 18km ride (11.2 miles)
So, I need to ride 88 commutes or 1584km to break even on the cost of the bike, lock, lights and cycloputer.
So, I'm half way there

My first goal is to have the cost of bike covered in bus savings.

the pubs are quite good ...
i think keeping my transportation costs around zero is a good thing
it is interesting as emotionally I think £4.50 isn't so much but $7.50 is a huge amount.

Nice - works flawless. The old one was already a bit knackered (from falls before I put some fender to protect it when falling).

Photo of $99 fixed gear/single speed freewheel bike with flashy/gaudy color scheme currently sold at Walmart. Has 622 x 40mm tires so should provide a reasonably comfy ride while providing the alleged benefits of a super cheap fixed gear/freewheel single speed bike for commuting. One local college age man rides one of these every day to the gym; he seems pleased with it. He probably doesn't read BF so is uninformed about the "horrors" of ownership of such a bike.

They are sold for around 50 euros in decent condition, but LBS couldn't find me a BB (didn't want to edit the frame to fit the modern BBs) for it, so my grandma's 1950s SS had to get retired. I'm still using it's mudguards on my current commuter.

"BSOs" like this one were mass produced and sold rather cheap back in the days. Before "SS" was hip, this was the default bike. Geared ones were exotic. "Fivespeeders" and "Tenspeeders".

One the one hand, a chain tensioner. $15 per pair, but I am only using one, so $8.
On the other... I broke 5000mi.
Thus,
8093km/5029mi
$446
$.089/mi
$.055/km ($US/km is kind of a funny metric )
I have new bar tape coming. Shipping the bike cross-country UPS and breaking down and reconstituting the bike last year was rough on the bar tape.

It wouldn't look out of place here in Lund or in Malmö, either! I have to start taking pictures of some of the cool chainguards that I see, too.
I was surprised to find that my local grocery store stocks bicycle tubes and patch kits, but the tubes all have Dunlop valves! I've never seen them before in the USA!!

And hypothetical question for Acid:
If I were to want to valuate my commuter for the purposes of working out one of these ratios what would you think would be a good starting point considering:
1:Frameset/fork/headset/seatpost and binder were freebies
2: Wheelset/tires/tubes/chain/cranks/chain/stem/bars/levers etc etc etc came from parts pile
3: I think I bought it a bar mounted bottle cage for about 6 bucks.. this is the only purchase I can remember making for this bike.
I think you can see my problem here as I don't feel $6 is necessarily a good valuation but that's where it stands in my mind.

Should I be shunned since I keep an eye out for sales on those? If I see one new for 60 and still boxed not built I'm gonna be on it like white on rice.

What do you think is a reasonable cost estimate for the bike? How much would it have cost to replace when you originally had "0" miles/km on it?
Just give us some numbers

I enjoy wrenching and it gives me peace of mind... so I consider it a no loss when I'm working on my own bikes. If I were to replace it now.. a comparable bike would probably be 400-500 new via something like bikes direct. I'll fudge up some numbers later.
