any info on these pads?
 
hi,
I was interested in brake pads to improve stopping on my road bike...

on the harris cyclery website I found this for the kool stop Mountain Salmon brake pads
this is the link to their site:

they basically say that the mountain brake pads are good all around pads...

so I need to know, has anyone put something like this on caliper brakes?
do they really improve stopping?
should I just use the ones for caliper brakes?

any help is appreciated!

I use them with my cantilever brakes and like them.

I use the red and black mountain bike version on linear brakes and cantilever brakes. They work very well and reduce brake squeal a lot. However, I don't know if they would work with a regular caliper brake. The studs on them are very long and, without the orbit washers, the nut may not be long enough to get them tightened down sufficiently.

They might work depending on the caliper. But they do make them for road brakes:

I use them on my road bike with caliper center pull brakes. They work great with the orbit washers to set the proper amount of toe in and the stopping power is much better than regular road pads.

so you actually use the "mountain style" for your caliper brakes or was it a different model?

I use the Dual-Compound MTB model on the rear of my road bike (calipers). Works great: http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/brakeshoes.html#mtndual

I have a pair of the "Supra 2" pads in the dual, black and salmon, compound. They work great on the MTB fork............there's tons of room between the wheel and fork.

They won't work on the Leader. There isn't room between the fork blade and long pad. I just need to order some short road type pads that don't reach back to the fork legs.

The factory Avid pads had a horrible squeal that only slightly improved with toe-in adjustments. The Kool Stops haven't made the first peep since they've been on the bike and they stop great.

Yes, mountain style. I use them on all my bikes.

Only issue is if the long tail of a MTB pad sticks back between narrow width forks ,
the QR may not open any further.

If you remove the front wheel to include in the U lock that could be a PIA to lock up your bike..

Kool-stop salmon and dual compound shoes are referenced here on an almost continual basis as some of the best rim brake pads you can get, particularly in rainy weather.

That's right, just another thing to think of.


Not the best angle, but the long pad might not even fit. Luckily, I have another bike to use them on...not a real waste of money.
