I guess the weather was too nice here & the bike rack at work was overflowing. Some twit managed to wedge his/her bike in next to mine so that the bikes were all tangled up (pedals in spokes, handlebars through cables. It took quite a while to disentangle the bikes. During one maneuver the bike rubbed up against the rack. Poof! there was a flurry of what looked like confetti.
I guess decals get quite brittle after 20 years.

that's too bad. I decided my classic mountain bike didn't owe me anything after 27 years and I decided to sacrifice its pristine paint job to the students of Penn State. I can't even look

Well, you can always get it blasted and powder coated some pretty color when you want it to look nice again :)

SUCKS! On the bright side, 21 years is a good run if this was the first major cosmetic damage....

How much would that cost, out of curiosity? (thinking vs a new bike)

Depends on where :) Some bike-specific places will do a really, really nice multi-stage powder coat for $600+. On the other hand, if you strip it down yourself and take it to an industrial powdercoater they'd probably do a single-stage job for around $100. Search for powercoating and call around, seems like most places do bikes often so they'd be willing to give you a pretty exact quote.

All powder coaters are not created equal. Some that do work primarily for industrial clients use very abrasive media and very high-pressure. Unless they are aware, everything that comes in gets the same treatment. Have seen bicycle frames come back from some shops looking like 30grit, and sheet metal twisted from the pressure. Another concern is the passage of time between media blasting and application of the coating. Bare metal rusts quickly, and if (much) corrosion gets trapped under the coating it can cause problems.

I saw a nice Bridgestone with an aftermarket metal flake white paint job and replacement decals just last week. The lady was quite proud of her 'Stone, and rightly so. It looked sharp. MB1.

Around here, $300 will score a real nice strip/paint (or powdercoat).

I'm proud of the rust stains on my American Eagle / Nishiki. They were all caused by sweat.
