Definitely prefer shallow drops, although I have a flat bar on one of the bikes. Flats are ok on most rides, but i defer to the drop bars (I ride mostly on the hoods, drops on occasion, and flats rarely).

Nitto rando drop bars on my converted High Plains MTB. Flat bars make my hands go numb after a few miles, foam grips, Ergon grips, doesn't matter. This never seems to happen when I am riding in the hoods. I am thinking of trying some Soma Highway One bars for another MTB conversion that is in the early stages.

For awhile I used flat bars on my Bridgestone MB-1 commuter with Origin8 drop bar ends. Eventually I set it up with drop bars, Shimano bar-cons and Tektro RL520 levers. I loved that setup; the lever are the most comfortable I've used on any bike.
In that configuration I was using a Rhode Gear hood mount mirror I'd had for years. Vibration eventually took its tool and the mount broke. I'm addicted to having a mirror and couldn't come up with a decent solution.
Eventually I bought a trekking bar on eBay and dug out my old Grip Shift setup. The bike looked great with the drop bar setup but the trekking bar is really the best for commuting.
