I have it setup as a poll so you don't have to actually say if you do or don't. I'm just curious as to who carries surface-to-air missiles while commuting. If you WOULD, but DON'T explain WHY if you want to thanks.

You shouldn't need one of these if you rode in a safe vehicular manner... motorists simply love bicyclists that are predictable, no matter if you slowed them down or in their mind delayed them a nanosecond.

But such as system is not intended for use on motorists. It is intended for use by cycling Taliban on the non believing heathens who offend the sensibilities of the faithful.

Education/obstructionism "by any means necessary" !

Due to Newton's first law and conservation of momentum, you would shoot in the opposite direction if you fired a SAM from your bike. Besides, surface to air missles are inappropriate for defense while commuting, unless you are cut off by a Cessna.

Yah... I used to carry one, back in the day...
I just found it to tough to ride through the wreckage / debris etc. after launching it.

Now I simply ride up along side offending vehicles & snap on a timed plastic explosive device, then carry on my way. By the time the blast occurs, I'm well out of harms way & don't have to ride through the shrapnel!

I find anti-tank missiles more useful. I keep a TOW in each pannier. The cable guidance is way better when you're destroying a delivery truck in traffic.

I am amazed at all those people running their mouths about STAM when they obviously don't know the truth about them.

Those F-16s that fly over the trail scare me. I wish I could carry.

What is he talking about?

Gentlemen and Ladies:

Missiles
It it my duty to tell you, as an ordnance expert, the only appropriate missile for anti-auto work is the Hellfire. They are a fire and forget system that allows you to continue cycling knowing that your missile will find and kill your target.

Rockets
An RPG-7, LAW, or AT4 also work quite well, but they are unguided, and thus rockets, not missiles.

Projectiles
My personal favorite is the M-79 Grenade Launcher. It throws a projectile that is both high explosive armor piercing as well as fragmentary. The M-79 is the best of all worlds when it comes to dealing with ruthless cagers, and it is easy to use when in the drops.

Firing a 40mm shell the M-79 packs a wallop and is light enough for carry in the mountain stages.

The flechette round is an excellent commuter tool for pesky pedestrians and aggressive dogs. Think of it as an upgrade to your can of Halt (r).

I believe both Topeak and REI offer a Carbon Fiber M-79.

it's newton's third law but yeah, this is why i only aim them rearward. i determine my targets and aim by hearing, which is much easier with out headphones. mostly though, i carry it for deterrence, as they have to wonder, "is that guy packing a missile or not?"

I prefer to be as unpredictable as possible. It's harder for the cagers to aim and talk on a cell at the same time.

That would be my guess.

I was wondering if you actually saw it on the road. Did you ever go to the Larz Anderson show?
The last show was missing the swap meet which I enjoyed a lot. They just had a show of nice bikes.
A beautiful Hetchins track bike...!! etc.

I'm still waiting for someone to develop a handlebar mounted rocket launcher. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

This thread, I'm pretty sure, is mocking the "do you carry a gun?" thread posted some time ago. So, I am in turn mocking people who got bent out of shape when some posters expressed anti gun sentiments. Without knowing the "truth".

I'll admit my joke was pretty obscure and I am sure only I think that it is funny

Mars, your avatar blinks too fast for me to tell what the 2nd image is. Would that be one of those little R/C cars the government put their webcam on and shot into space?

Just remember to be very, very careful if you find yourself surrounded on the road by black Suburbans driven by guys with dark glasses.
