No, no...that's fietsbob's wacky sense of humor! Waffling, in the sense that I used it here in the commuting forum yesterday, is not a cycling specific term, it's just one of the common definitions of the word, i.e. being hesitant, noncommital, or indecisive.

Regarding 'cafe bars,' I'd say that is not a cycling specific term either, and that it does not, in fact, even exist in the cycling world, as I've only seen a couple of small, custom builders make a handlebar that comes close to the type of handlebar popularized by English motorcycle riders in the 60s/70s called 'cafe racers,' who used Ace, or Clubman bars, e.g. Seven Cycles: https://www.sevencycles.com/press/130...cafe-racer.php

But it would be very entertaining if it developed into one. Bikelanguage 101. I think as long as the thread stays on the front page for a few days, all the words he listed will be addressed, and more will be fun.

Primary chain drives the transmission , the secondary chain drives the wheel.
Bicycle application: Gear Box is a IGH *, second cog is on the hubshell, in place of the spokes on one hub flange
{Rohloff and other Disc brake hubs can mount a sprocket on in place of the disc)
* Optional on adult trikes.. use a 3 speed hub and 2 chains.
Cafe bars, derived from the British Motor cycle scene Cafe Racers
the race is between Cafes, a street road race , one lane roads ,
probably more a point to point for lowest time. Ala, IOM TT but on open roads..
Now in the bicycle Biz
you can fit handlebars somewhat like that..

I'd like to add to the dictionary what I call the "Mr. Magoo." That is the iPod wearing, usually younger, adult pedestrian who considers the bike path and/or the street an extension of their sidewalk/front yard/playground. They wander into and out of your path aimlessly and unpredictably.

Waffle stomper: First appeared as a Vibram lugged sole hiking boot circa late '60's & early 70's and usually worn with Levis, plaid shirts, all color matched to an obligate dog with a red bandanna around its neck. Typically found on the feet of at any number of PNW college campus gathering of young adults who are likely sitting in a loose circle sharing a controlled substance.

FRED is by far the most misused/ abused/ dennigrated monicker. It is NOT a homeless hobo on a dorkmobiler MTB with deraillers.
A FRED bike is STEEL, a heavy level TT tourbike, SS or IGH, threaded headset, fenders, dyno-lighted and ridden with all necessary tools and gear. Aka a Clubman Bike.
A FRED guy is someone admirable with superior conditioning due to bike weight and excessive worldly miles travelled. He can therefore mock CF equipped posers' inabilities. AKA Peewee Herman.
Road bikers need to get their own name to mock.

I've been wondering that too.
Around here the only context I've seen it in is when folks like me, who have multiple bikes, refer to our primary commuters. In my case, that's my first go-to commuting bike, the one I'd keep if I could own only one, my highly customized 2006 Trek Portland. (I think the frame, crankset, left lever, and the front disc brake caliper are the only things still original on the bike.) Four-seasons, all-conditions, take-no-prisoners, gets me to work on time, every time bike.
But, I can't own just one bike. It's not in me. Since commuting and errands count for 65-75% of my cycling in any given year, I also have a three-seasons commuter, that fills in during the winter on days I don't need the studed tires. And the Litespeed for those 25-35% "other" rides.

It asks why, but you don't have to answer. If there's a real reason you want to explain do so, otherwise save your fingers for other meaningless nonsense.

I thought that "Fred" was someone (probably a utilitarian cyclist) that uses completely utilitarian equipment without regard to style. For instance, I am very familiar with most bicycle technology, but I consider myself pretty high up the Fred scale. I ride with a reflective vest, mirrors, fenders, etc.

From the search source that FB suggested (bicycle slang dictionary - salmon):
fred1) n. a person who spends a lot of money on his bike and clothing, but still can't ride. "What a fred -- too much Lycra and titanium and not enough skill." Synonym for poser. Occasionally called a "barney".
2) n. a person who has a mishmash of old gear, does't care at all about technology or fashion, didn't race or follow racing, etc. Often identified by chainring marks on white calf socks. Used by "serious" roadies to disparage utility cyclists and touring riders, especially after these totally unfashionable "freds" drop the "serious" roadies on hills because the "serious" guys were really posers. This term is from road touring and, according to popular myth, "Fred" was a well-known grumpy old touring rider, who really was named Fred.

2) is the only one I'd heard before.
So basically "Fred" is to the cycling world what nearly everyone in the world would be to a Formula 1 driver.

What I mean't is that the meaning of primary is contextual, contextually obvious, and has no cycle specific meaning. I don't understand how it could be used that someone doesn't understand what is being said.
