What is your commuting/biking gear wish list?

I have some holiday money I could spend on some new bike gear for commuting, and have been trying to decide what items are at the top of my wish-list. I admit I am a gear junkie, and I am sure others here are too. All this thinking made me curious what gear others have at the top of their wish list.

Personally my wish list looks something like
1. New GPS enabled bike computer (Garmin Edge 510 or maybe Sigma ROX 10?)
2. New Rack (Tubus Logo evo or maybe Cargo evo?)
3. Ortlieb Office pannier bag, or something similar
4. New bike shoes
5. New high vis shell jacket, with good breathability and/or venting options - not sure what yet

Curious what others wish lists would look like. Maybe there is some really cool gear I haven't even thought about yet!!!

I don't really need anything. Don't have anything on your list other than my 6 year old jacket and my rack is already OK (cheap-ish Planet Bike one). Don't really want any of it either. I own plenty of gadgets, the bike is one place I can get away from them.

I don't need anything as I have everything for my commute. What I would like is a GoPro to have video evidence when I need. It is sad that I need something like this but 3 altercations with cars this year makes me want one even more.

A few practical items on my near-term shopping list
1. New chain for my Jake
2. Extra long bolt so I can put a front fender on my Jake the Snake
3. Second (and maybe third) handlebar mounting bracket for my NiteRider head light so I can move it between bikes more easily

But none of that's any fun. My real wish list looks more like this:
1. A Whiskey 7 carbon fork for my Kona Jake.
2. Chris King Inset3 headset to make the fork above work for me.
3. New wheels for my Kona Jake, maybe non-machined HED Belgium2 rim laced to SRAM X.9 hubs.
4. Nice warm weather bib shorts

I very much like the TDL SVC200 camera. I used to have a GoPro and I like this camera better. It's about $135 shipped. It's easier to mount on a helmet than a GoPro or pretty much any other cam I've owned. Here's a review:

If you get one, I designed a simple mounting plate for it to mount it to helmets a little tighter than the supplied mounts. Here it is:

Let me know if you want one, I'd be happy to mail one out.

I am putting money away in hopes of getting a custom CX frame from Eric Baar (Ground Up Designs) currently. Ever since moving to Colorado Springs I have wanted one of his frames pretty badly.

I'm torn between that one, and one of the RD32II cameras. Still haven't made a decision, and not sure when I'm going to dedicate the money to it, but would like to sooner rather than later, as I kind consider it a piece of safety equipment. Since I'll get three paychecks in January, I may well make the decision on which camera by mid-month. I don't like how big the Go-Pro is, especially in its waterproof case (which I'll need), not to mention the expense of the Go-Pro.

I need a couple more bib shorts, and I'd like a new pair of shoes for winter, but other than that I'm pretty well set for my commuter/commuting finally.

I came to this thread to post about how I want a Gopro, damn.

I also wouldn't mind a CX bike to commute on but that's just a standard case of N+1.

I got a couple gift cards this year and loaded up on closeout shorts and jerseys; I only had one set that I wore everyday and washes every other day. My wife helped me realize I needed more lol.

Warmer weather. Have everything I need.

Go with the SVC200, absolutely, no question. I have two RD32II cameras and the SVC200 is better in every way. Better battery life, replaceable battery (one RD32II is only 6 months old and already the battery only lasts 20 minutes on a charge, I think there was something wrong with the battery to start with, but I can't replace it). The RD32II also has the problem that it puts out weird format files that I have to scrub through AVIDemux before almost anything else will read them.

There's no comparison IMO.

If you still want an RD32II, I'm going to be putting the one that still has decent battery life up on eBay for $75 or so when I get around to it. It's still usable but I really don't like that the battery could die and I couldn't do much about it.

I have opened up the other one and tried to find a replacement battery but it's a very odd size.

Got Everything I Need... now

Guess what my sweetie got me for The Holidays?! Merino Wool baselayer undershirts! I listened to you guys, and she must have been listening to me. I haven't tried them out yet. I guess she got tired of finding sopping wet paper towel sheets inside my polypropelene baselayers. BTW... 3 altercations with cages in one season... it isn't them... ... FWIW.

You can get one for not a ton of cash if you look in the right places/people.

fietsbob 12-29-13 03:11 PM

got myself an Ortlieb-Brompton O bag.

rumrunn6 12-30-13 12:35 PM

new job within commuting distance

dramiscram 12-30-13 01:15 PM

A new bike, I already did about 30000 kms in the last 4 years with my 500$ bike, I don't know how long I will be able and willing to keep it going.

Yeah, I've got Beligium 2's on my CX race bike. They're so solid. Not bad looking either.

SmallFront 12-30-13 02:17 PM

Some spring bicycle trousers in wool, made to look like "gents'" trousers. Yup, I don't do tights or bibs, but at this time of year it seems I can only get softshell cycling trousers, and I don't want softshell, I want wool or at least a wool-blend.

Hopefully in a month or so the spring/summer collections come into the shops.

tarwheel 12-30-13 02:17 PM

I got all of the items on my wish list in December for Christmas, including:
- New LED rechargeable light (Light & Motion Taz 1000)
- Showers Pass Elite 2.1 jacket
- Recovering one of my saddles in red faux leather
- New warm winter gloves (PI Softshell Elite)

My birthday is coming up in a few weeks, but I can't think of anything bike related that I really need or want right now. Eventually I might order a new wheelset with Velocity A23 rims, but not sure if I want to go that route yet.

haha good answer

1. fenders
2. ortlieb panniers or something waterproof
3. a waterproof BRIGHT jacket.
4. 2 more lights one for helmet and one for rear.

polishmadman 12-30-13 02:57 PM

I have a Jamis Aurora on my list. Something I can commute on and maybe some light touring. Plus, I wouldn't mind a new set of 36 spoke wheels for the schwinn. Nothing fancy, just something to replace the crap they put on it.

Rudz 12-31-13 01:00 PM

So far my nashbar waterproof panniers have been great. I don't care for the mounting system, but for half of the Ortilebs, I'll take em.

noglider 12-31-13 02:52 PM

I'm'a buy me a new dynamo hub. I tried out some new lights using a sidewall dynamo, and they're great. Now that I know I like the lights, I'll spring for the hub and build me a new front wheel.

Rudz, I can build your wheels for you. Just let me know what you need.
