Bulls eye jockey wheels worth it???
 
I saw some Bullseye jockey wheels on the 'bay, starting at about $45. I can get the standard issue plastic/resin ones for about a quarter of that.
Hence, my quandry. Do the Bullseye ones last longer than the OEM ones? Are the Bullseye wheels worth it?

I have a set, and can't notice a difference between it on an NR and another NR with the stock resin pulleys. I think the elevated prices these days are due to cach. They won't crack, like many resin/plastic pulleys can, but my mentality is that I'll wait for that to happen before I buy new alu pulleys.

OP are you talking about the rear derailler pulley wheels? How long does it take you to wear a set out? What happens when they are worn? Do you think the type of chain lube you use makes them wear more quickly?

I didn't link anything, I have noticed similar links when I am not logged in as well. I only click on links that that I can tell were included by the people posting.

I am talking about the rear derailleur pulleys. It generally takes me about two years to wear out a set. When they are worn they get real pointy, and the shifts start getting sloppy. Don't know if the chain lube affects the useful life of the jockey wheels or not.

$45 for Bulls Eye jockey wheels? That's a lot more than the $10 jockey wheels that I buy from velo orange, which have sealed bearings and probably last as long as anything else on the market. I have these on all 4 of my bikes:

I just noticed that they are out of stock on this item, but they will probably be available again in the near future.

Of course they are worth it! They save you enough energy on a 100 mile ride to lift 100 pounds 100 feet! That's what I remember from their marketing campaign 30 years ago, so don't quote me.

On the other hand, if you want to save some money, and STILL get cool looking red pulleys, buy a set of these!

I've never been riding along and thought: "man, this sure would be easier if I had some better jockey wheels".
Not sure of the advantage.

Now I have thought: "man, I have a few extra bucks to blow; what can I get for my bike?"

So I understand your question.

In the rare cases of broken pulleys it does not apply but in my 6-7 years in bike shops, the ONLY pulleys I have seen worn out were from people that let them get a bunch of gunk built up on them.

Not saying they can not wear out even when properly clean, just that it is extremely rare.

So I personally would not say it is worth it unless you simply want them for aesthetics sake.

Since Bullseye has closed it's doors, they are collector priced ..

I got Tacx sealed bearing pulleys, recently, made in 10 & 11t type. nylon..

bought a set when my suntour SB pulley broke while touring NL in the late 80's.



When they were available I got a set of Carmichael Sealed bearing and Titanium ..

metal pulleys are such that you hear the chain making contact with them..

Yes, I was going to say that alu pulleys are loud, and that should be considered. Also, one needs to be sure they're not putting fixed bearing pulleys where floating bushing pulleys are spec'd (the upper pulley on some derailleurs).

I've used various aftermarket pulleys over the years, and would say there is probably no good reason to use them other than style or the need to save a few bucks over OEM. That said, I'm not a real high mileage rider (on any one bike) and have never had a problem with pulley wear.

If you can build a device that can measure the difference in power required to turn the best jockey wheel versus the average one, you should definitely have a job in electronic sensor technology, because you're really good at detecting ridiculously low values.

I put a set of jockey wheels that I printed on my old hybrid just for fun last year. They seem about as good as anything else. They use 50 cent ball bearings bought off ebay, so I'd guess they cost me about 75 cents each.

RD pulleys usually wear out at the rim faster than at the bearing, so that's the determining factor. IME the life of various pulleys is within a narrow band, best to worst. So even if premium pulleys last longer, they most likely won't last long enough to justify the price difference. In the case of the Bulls Eyes do you really believe they might last 4 times as long as a cheap set?

OTOH- if you're interested in cool factor, then they may well be worth the cost.
