I have a B.A. in Art. I do some free-lance art work, but up until last summer I worked as a senior account supervisor in a call center ( not telemarketing ). I had a 3 mile round trip commute that I stretched further and further. I was over-worked, under-paid and working for a pitiful company that treated employees with absolute disrespect. I quit that job.
I now now work for the "largest rural health care facility in the country" as an Administrative Assistant. The job is simple. I have a 24 mile round trip commute. Most of my co-workers (and my husband and son) think I'm crazy for riding to work. They assume I can't drive and are shocked when I tell them I do own a car and can legally drive it.

The more inclement weather days I ride in on, the more people suspect I have a DUI or revoked license

OTOH, while the library is in a borderline area, my commute takes me through what can only be described as da 'hood. I won't stop there. I've been offered five bags for my bike. Although, that was for my now-retired bright yellow full-Sora Trek. My bare Ti full-DuraAce Litespeed has never attracted any attention.

In the IT department, my office is in the pictured building. Though I am in IT, I have a doctorate in physics (earned at Fermilab).

Safety matter.
YellowBike and I were hit by a car in the spring of 2008. The fork required replacement.
I was concerned about a small hairline crack in the paint in the head tube emanating up from the lower headset cup. Everyone who examined it said, "crack in the paint, the aluminum's just fine". Four years and many several thousand miles later, the front end suddenly began feeling loose, like a loose headset. Yes, it really was crack in the aluminum head tube.
YellowBike was retired. Its frame hangs on the wall. I bought the Ribble Winter/Audax frame to replace it. Moved most of the components over, but the old fork was a 1" steerer, so I also bought a Deda carbon fork with fender eyelets. (I have a strong preference for aluminum frames and carbon forks on my commuters.)
I still have to sell the fork. Anybody looking for a deal on a gently used Wound Up Road Fork with 1" carbon steerer and fender eyelets?

Okay I'll play. I have a bachelors degree in biochemistry and used to work in biotech. Just recently the company that I worked for told me, and over a hundred others, that our services were no longer needed and so I am currently unemployed. But when I had a job, I had the luxury of showers, lockers and even an onsite cafeteria. The commute was 5 miles to work if I really needed to get to work fast or if I just didn't care if I got killed by a car. But usually I took the safer route that was 12-15 miles each way.
Now as I am searching for a new job, I keep the commuting lifestyle in mind. How far would the commute be, traffic issues, showers and stuff like that. Really helps remind me of just how good I had it.

I am a sex researcher that specializes in pedophilia. We also look at other paraphilias (better known as sexual perversions) so I have heard it all. Nothing shocks me or surprises me any more. I have seen in my career., over 3500 sex offenders. When I tell people what I do for a living they are either totally repulsed at the idea or want to know all the details. Strange phenomena. My wife is totally repulsed, so I never talk about my work with her.

Currently a Kitchen Manager at a Beef 'o' Brady's. Only one semester away from my A.S degree. I bombed my last semester which put me on academic suspension. My plan was to work at my current job for a couple of years, save up some money and continue with school. During my 'break' from school I've probably changed my major a few hundred times and I'm still unsure. I'm still way above the weight requirement for the Highway Patrol so that's going to take a little longer than expected.
I'd love to get a masters degree and become a U.S Marshal some day. But I am stuck here for now.

Graduated from a music college with a degree in "Professional Music" (which, as a major, is more about breadth than depth, and you take pretty much whatever classes you want, from the various departments). I work as a salesman for one of the larger musical instrument retail chains, and occasionally do freelance stagehand work when I have time.

Exterminator. Poking around in every bodies basements, sheds and garages killing bugs, mice and such. Rich employment history: restaurant management, auto service manager, insurance, vacuum salesman, factory worker, health/physics, decontamination specialists, etc. in the nuclear industry. We also made tools for the nuclear industry as well as tested and evaluated them. There may be more jobs...I forget. It's been a hoot!

I've been lurking here for awhile and I haven't seen any threads on the subject. So, I'd like to know where you all work and what your job entails. I got thinking about it since anyone that I talk to believes that if you commute by bike, you don't have an education. I'll start it off...
I work for a private university as a stage manager doing staging and performance lighting.

Flunked out of college after two years but did later earn an ASN in nursing at age 35 and began working as an RN in hospitals (after being an LPN for ten years.) Finally completed a BS in Nursing three years ago at age 60 and now work in Quality/Performance Improvement for a Very Large Healthcare Organization. Spend much time looking at patient records to see if we are doing what we should be doing - for instance, checking the record to see if an approved antibiotic was given in the correct timeframe before a knee replacement surgery. (Prophylactic antibiotic administration can greatly reduce the incidence of surgical site infections.)
I try to ride to work a couple of times a week Spring through Fall.

Government regulator for a large city here in Souithern California. I've got two bachelors degrees (Chemistry and Industrial Mgmt). Started my worklife in the chemical-heavy industries (plating/metal finishing/chemical sales & technical support), got laid off repeatedly when those industries downsized here in CA, so got a job as a regulator. Businesses like the fact I understand what they do (unusual for a govt. regulator) and can give them some direction on how to meet regularoty requirements, but a few hate me with a passion since they can't B.S. me.

My current career is filling out job applications, writing resumes and cover letters, updating my online portfolio and networking. I'm allowed to telecommute and set my own hours which is good, but there are no days off.
As a second job, I've written a couple of books, Blender 3D Basics, and Blender 3D Printing Essentials.
But I'm hoping to get more focused on doing 3D animation, and especially interactive 3D.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Semi (forcibly ) retired... working as a frame-builder / technician in partnership with Arvon Cycles and also run my own little shop here (by appointment).
Formerly worked as a machinist and my professional background was in Rehabilitation, specializing in the treatment of persons with ASD and program planning / design and also worked in corrections with (violent) young offenders.
Turning wrenches and playing with fire is better for my state of mind and I can work around my health limitations when I set my own schedule.
My commute varies between 32 steps to my shop or 50 km to the main shop and I enjoy the ride out there when the weather is nice and drive when it isn't.

I have a BS in geology with a minor in GIS. I work as a GIS Specialist at an archaeological consulting company. I ride to work most days, 4.5 flat miles one way.
It's not geology, but I enjoy the archaeology and my co-workers are all great people. Most of the time I make maps for them for their field work and to be included in the reports they have to submit for projects. Sometimes I go in the field to help out on surveys. I have to walk around in remote areas and look for artifacts. Sometimes I find cool stuff, like prehistoric projectile points (arrowheads). I also run the Trimble GPS when I am out there.
We also have an office cat. Best perk ever.

Do you dispense your duties exclusively for the school or do you assist with outside parties that use the Mabee Center- like the Muppets and Globetrotters?
