Looking for pannier to fit 15x11 laptop
 

My job has me lugging a fairly heavy Dell laptop measuring 15x11x1.5 inches.

I am tired (literally) of stuffing it in a backpack

I have done some research and shopping online for panniers, most of them state capacity in cubic inches. not helpful.
I need 15x11x1.5 inches, with a bit of wiggle room for easy access.

Anyone recommend a specific model that will fit?

Check out the timbuk2 shift pannier. It's a messenger bag with pannier hooks. I use it with my laptop.

Don't recommend carrying a laptop in a pannier. Your body provides much better cushioning. Any way you can avoid transporting, such as e-mailing files or carrying a thumb drive?

alan s is correct (I learned this the hard way ) I snapped parts off inside hard drive and lost 100% information and unless your heavy dell is using a SSD drive I would stick to the backpack

I have a laptop which is about 13 x 10 x 1.3. I pack it inside a cushioned laptop bag which is about 2" larger in each direction. Is use this bag:

This might fit your larger lap top as well.

This bag I pack into my Ortlieb Backroller. It does not go all the way down since the paniers have that triangular shape towards the bottom but the panier is high enough to still roll the top closed. I normally also pack my clothes to change in that panier which act as additional cushion.
But my Ortlieb paniers are already 20 years old and I don't know of the newer Ortlieb backrollers are the exact same size.

Time to upgrade to a smaller and lighter laptop with a faster cpu.

My (heavy) laptop is close to that same size (15 x 10 x 1.5), and I carry it in a padded neoprene sleeve in my Ortlieb Backroller Classic.

Needless to say, our laptops are a standardized item and bike commuting portability was not on the list of considerations. If the powers that be decide to "upgrade", the new machine will probably be bigger and heavier.

We cannot email the data back and forth because...let's just say it could have your social security numbers in it and we are careful about not losing those. They are working on VPN, so maybe in a few years I won't have to pack the laptop at all.

How on earth did you manage that? Assuming you power down the laptop properly so everything in the hard drive is sent back to it's rest position they can withstand huge acceleration forces.

I've switched to a tablet, & a netbook for my non home based needs, but I used one of these for my 16" laptop while I was doing that game. More of a retro look if that's what suits ya, & comes with a rain cover.
