So I was thinking quite a bit about the hwy 27 cyclist in Lexington and her situation. It was bugging me because I travel on similar roads and never have had this bad of an experience. The difference is half my route is on bike trails and the other half has bike lanes. How much is this court case costing? And let's be honest, the drivers have places they need to go and I've behaved poorly in my last when I was late and frustrated by traffic. Haven't most of us. So both sides have an interest in using the road and a right to use the road. Can you imagine if the opposing parties decided to work together to find a solution. They could probably pay a street sweeper to clean the shoulders and have the highway department add striping for a bike lane. That solution might have even encouraged others to get out of their cars. We can all benefit from trying to understand the other person's position and what in their life makes their opinion different from our own. Maybe if we did that more this country would be more united.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but the courts are open every day anyway, and it's just a misdemeanor case over 3 traffic tickets. This case is not going to cost much additional money that the county wasn't already spending to run it's daily business. They aren't going to spend a lot of money on experts. Two lawyers (one prosecutor and one appointed by the court) are going to be doing what they would be paid to do that day in court anyway - arguing some case or other. Impaneling a jury for the day might cost a few dollars - mainly in terms of paying them their very small per diem.

The good thing is that it's bringing a lot of local media attention to the condition of the road and the shoulder. Plus, the judge has already ruled in her favor once. So the cyclist, Cherokee Schill, is already doing her part to bring the kind of improvement of conditions you are referring to.
