pretty neat?, no more hassle and expence of building a new wheel with dynamo hub generator?

It doesn't say what kind of led's, how much light, shaped beam, or other important details.
Also, if energy is being induced in the coil, there is still going to be resistance felt at the wheel, though probably less than a traditional bottle type dynamo.

Some other group had a similar sounding kickstarter based on eddy currents a few months back.
Edit: JC Koto beat me to it with a link.

Pretty sure these have been around a while, kickstarters notwitstanding.

We've had similar systems in the shop. PITA to set up, and be-seen rather than to-see lights.
I'd not consider something like this for personal use over building or buying a dynamo-hub wheel.
Maybe someday when the tech is buried in the fork and rim as part of an integrated system, but not current iterations.

I don't know whether this is better than a hub dynamo or not. Both will introduce resistance to turning the wheel because of the interplay between the magnets and coils. Since the magnets/coils are more to the outside of the rim with this system than with a hub unit, it would seem to not need as heavy of a magnet nor as many windings in the coil, since this placement moves the magnet past the coils faster and thus generates more electricity for a given size magnet/coil.
As far as the resistance to turning though, I'd expect that to be the same for both systems.
That said, I'm speculating about just one characteristic of the system. The only way to know for sure is for somebody to compare this to a hub dynamo and publish results.
Edit: My comment about needing smaller magnets may not be accurate since the magnets/coils are mounted to the fork/spokes and presumably have a lot more space between them when designed as integral members of the hub.

Dynamo lighting has come a long way since 2005.

You know, ever since seeing that I've always wanted to give one of those old bottle dynamos a go to see just how bad they really were.
