Does anyone commute in the Winston-Salem, NC area?
I'm thinking of commuting by bike to a new potential job and was wondering if anyone in my area does it also...
I know during the day, riding the roads can be good and bad...one out of ten cars want to buzz ya...esp. today when the wind of the front end of the some of the trucks made me feel like I need a cyclocross bike...
If you're not from my area, how's your ride? what time do you leave for work and what time do you leave work?
Thanks for any help...

15 years ago i commuted by bike to BGSM...i rode a mtb
my commute was 4 miles and took 15-20 minutes.. got hit by only one delivery truck in 4 years.
have not lived there for 10+ years but was recently back for a visit. it is not a bad place to ride ... roads are wide and many city streets have 25 mph speed limits
however you are up in king and i am not sure how the roads are coming down into w-s from there

Mr. Leadbutt, I live down in southeast WS, off of Kernersville Rd, and commute to Greensboro a few times a week. I have the route down to 15 miles and have found a perfect back-road route that avoids all the major traffic hassles.
I leave as soon as the sun comes up and I can see. I've had pretty good luck with traffic, one incident involving a soccer mom and an unruly youth but nothing serious. I have found that if you take some time and find a route that avoids traffic it makes it a whole lot more enjoyable ride.
I'm not real familiar with King, other than going up for the flea market I don't get up their much. I have ridden through and as I recall the roads were not bad.
I would find a route and try it out in your car one morning and evening at the time you would be riding and see what its like. Then give it a shot. I think you'll find that you have a much better day when you start it off with a ride.
Good luck. Shoot me a message if you'd like to talk or get together for a ride.
Dave

Considering this was posted 10 years ago, I realize the likelihood of a reply is remote; however, I will try anyway.
Still commuting to Greensboro from Winston-Salem? I am considering trying it once a week to start; however, the route that I have has me going down Mountain Street to Market Street (my office is downtown GSO). Any insight on how these roads are in the morning between say 6-7:30am?
