Well, you wouldn't use all the holes on smaller wheels I guess? And 42 would be to allow cargo weight plus rider on a 2 wheel frame. I'd want 85 lbs of cargo allowance. Going over a road hole with fully inflated tire, larger rider, and cargo at speed would put a lot of force on the rear wheel.

Tom, my experience is that rims take less of a beating on potholes and the like with more crosses and more, lighter spokes. Also that they can take a harder hit on such obstacles without denting. I find 2.0 (14 ga) 3X, the most common factory built wheel, to be a rim killer. If I rebuild that wheel 1.8-1.6 (15-17 ga) 4X I will have much rounder wheels at the end of the second winter. (I'm 150 pounds and can get good use out of Mavic Open Pros and the like. Obviously heavier riders will have to scale up my examples)
