It doesn't matter what they were "angry" about.... anger is just fear. You scared the person.... or for whatever reason they were frighten and you was there to blame. I think I would have just apologized to the person saying "I am sorry... I certainly didn't mean to frighten you". Then I would have moved on. It's their fear... they own it... it has very little if anything to do with you.
I often shout the simple "bicycle" when passing anything... but I don't always. I wouldn't deliberately scare anyone out on the MUPs (or anywhere for that matter).

There are some cyclists here (Portland) who are militant about enforcing the "on your left" so-called rule, as they see it. They snap at anyone who passes them without uttering the magic words. It is almost like you are supposed to ask their permission to pass, via this code phrase. I happily blow them off. I think most of them are simply officious busybodies, others resent being so slow, and a few might actually be frightened every time another cyclist passes them without making an appointment. I don't care about the fears of the last group. I'm not responsible for their phobias and lack of situational awareness. Maybe they should ride the bus.

As a ped I prefer bells. It is more soothing and does the job very nicely. As a cyclist I just slow down and follow the ped person(s) until they notice me and move over and then I thank them and move on. It seems to work well for me. For other cyclists I just pass on the left when I can making sure there are a few feet between us. I have never had another cyclist complain to me - Maybe it's the supposed "Minnesota Nice" and they are seething with anger underneath. I won't know or care.

(And deity forbid that you pass these folk on the right in a separate vehicle lane or on a 15 foot wide mup!)

Did she ever calm down and begin to act civil? I’m inclined to think she didn’t. Maybe her real problem was that a male didn’t simply remain behind her to ogle her caboose, but instead decided to pass her because her caboose wasn’t ogle-worthy.

No one carries the DogBoy
I used to say "on your left." Now almost everyone I encounter is wearing headphones so I check ahead and if its clear I pass without saying anything. I have only startled one person that I know of. I was coming down a hill at around about 25 mph with my full suitcase of courage on the back rack and I went past a jogger. When I went past she let out a little scream and jumped off the path. I yelled "Sorry." Never saw her again.

I have the opposite experience. Calling out "On your left!" seems to be an invitation to conversation to some, and they turn toward the left, often veering that way. A bell is a mechanical, non-human sound that people understand as being on a bike and they just melt to the right.

I would expect that someone would react to that by assuming it's someone they know and would turn to greet them (i.e., move toward the noise). After all, it's a greeting, an invitation to conversation.

I often see idiots on bicycles buzzing pedestrians...Buzzing a jogger at 25 mph was an idiotic thing to do. Next time you pass somebody at that speed, give them a lot of room, or slow down and use a bell.

You cannot ride that fast on a MUP when pedestrians (or slower cyclists) are present. Slow down, or ride on the street.

When on a mup I get sick of ringing bells etc. I just get a speaker and mp3 player and play music at a volume that anyone near me can hear. Some get annoyed, but they all know I'm there. It works better than the startled rabbit thing.

I lay on my bell () if people dont move out of the way, otherwise i stay quiet and relegate these "walkers" to simple moving obstructions and go around if i need to. I dont know what will work best for them, and yes, not my responsibility to make my passing known.
If its really clogged on the path, i simply slow down or stop, no bell no vocals, just sit wait ok i can pass now.
I prefer riding on roads, as weird as that might sound, because a least in that environment everyone has to follow the same rules and expects everyone else to (at least in theory ).

In this scenario, I'd be the guy on the "right", hogging the lane! On my daily uphill, I occasionally get passed by somebody who has to veer into the vehicle lane, and every time I feel bad that I wasn't riding more to the right, more appropriate to my speed!

Going to friends house after fireworks in town here...... I took the path in the park along 332. There were tons of people walking back to their homes/cars. It amazed me how pretty much no one though to look back, and a few people even said " oh its the ice cream man! (was using my bell vigorously). I had my headlight on (the law) and was on the very far left side. I had to stop and really super slow a bunch. A few people were even seemingly angry "how dare someone ride a bike near me". That was not pleasant.
Then turning for the crosswalk i saw 2 girls on BSO's, no helmets no lights no nothing. One of the girls even said "oh thats a great idea, a bell" i was thinking -how about a helmet and not ride in the dark with no lights?- then someone she was with ran and stopped dead in front of me, even though i was ringing my bel pretty much non stop. This was in the middle of the lane.
Thankfully i only have to deal with this onslaught of ignorance a few times a year, but sheesh some people are so indignant and clueless, it makes me embarrassed to live here.
I would have gone on the road, but traffic was sardine bumper to bumper, and being directed by police and lot of people unfamiliar with the area etc.
