Your ideal commute distance?

My ideal commute distance would be 30 min. each way (7-8 miles)! Why? Because I can make it longer on nice days or just ride the short distance on nasty days. Mine is 12.5 each way but is broken on 8.5 to the train then 4 miles at the other side, not ideal. Sometimes I get off on the stop before to ride home 12 miles one way (3.5 longer). In very few occasions I leave earlier to make my ride from home to the train longer. That's why a shorter than 30 min could get me lazy, but 30 keep me honest on my fitness.

When I was a truck driver, I could get up, dress, grab a Pop-Tart and make the two step commute, from the bunk to the driver's seat, all in about three minutes. Perfect.

Super-spreader
My commute of about 9.5 miles each way is ideal. Occasionally, I'll want more and take a long way home. Every now and then in the winter I wish it were shorter.

I work 39 kms (24 miles) from home.. Since moving I haven't ventured out on the bike to work. The past commute was about 7 miles. I plan on starting 12 miles from work. Found a great city park to leave my car for the day where I'll start and end my commute. Hoping to eventually make the round tripe from door to door

My commute is 11 miles one way but I'd rather be closer, like 6 miles, for those morning when I ride with the pillow printed on my face. I can always make it longer if I want, which I do sometimes.

- I have a direct one-way 14 mile ride outbound from downtown Boston to a suburb through varied pleasant residential and light commercial streets (pleasant urban; pleasant suburban; ritzy suburban; and gritty, but safe and interesting urban neighborhoods). IMO, 10 miles is a minimum distance for exercise benefit.
- I don’t punch a clock, so I can come to work at my own time, within reason, so I commute very early in the AM, and can start working immediately on arrival.
- For training purposes I can extend my commute through additional nice routes including premier cycling suburbs, such as Dover and Sherborn [up to about 30 miles one way].
- Major roads on my route are expeditiously plowed in the winter.
- I can take my bike on a Commuter Rail about 1.5 miles from my home, and about 500 yards from my workplace [I do this because I was seriously injured in a bike accident, and I had to promise the family that I would not ride home at night].
