Front derailleur rubbing on new bike

Hi All,

I just bought a new bike from the local bike shop, and when I got it home and reassembled it (I'd only taken front and back tires of to transport it), I noticed the front derailleur rubbing, especially on cross or near cross gears. This didn't happen when I was test riding/driving the bike.

What can I do to fix this?

It's a 24 speed, 3 front cogs, 8 back.

Usually I'm a fan of fix-it-myself, but since you just bought it, why not take it to the shop?

I don't think anything is wrong with it. Front derailleurs rub on cross and near cross gears. I have to trim my FD after only two or three rear shifts. Some FD are less sensitive but they will shift slower.

Search the forum for "cross chaining".

Then stop doing it.

Bad, not bad. Disagreement and dissension from both camps.

Modern 10 and 11sp chains tolerate it more than older chains. But, I doubt that a new 8sp bike came with a $50 chain.

Road it again today to nail down exactly when it's happening. It's definitely happening on cross gears, but I try to avoid those. What concerns me is it's also happening when I'm on the second gear front and gears 6-8 on the back. I don't think it should be doing that.

What shifter and derailleur do you have? Might actually be normal behavior if you're intended to make adjustments to the FD with your front shifter.

It's hard to say without looking at it, but you may just need to adjust the barrel on the shifter. If you're concerned, have a bike shop look at it.

Having said that, it may just be the nature of the components that it rubs on the higher gears when using your middle chain ring. At that point, you should probably be using the large chain ring anyways.

Look at this page from Park Tools.

Also search YouTube-----lots of bike repair stuff there.

Shimano has made it difficult to link to a specific page but you can find your specific components here.
