I use mountain bike shorts which eliminate the need for bibs... though I do have bib tights which I really appreciate in winter...

Bibs are essentially shorts with built in suspenders/braces .. you can also add suspenders to your shorts, if the pulling them up is an issue..

True, but it won't necessarily eliminate the squeezing at the waist. It might, but it might not. It might be possible to cut the elastic to eliminate or reduce the squeezing. I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble.

I can't risk a huge chunk of money on that, though i guess is my position on it. Cold time is coming up soon, and i finally have a real winter biking capable wardrobe vs the limited set of options i had a few years ago. The fact that i have two helmets of 2 different designs helps too.

I can't say that I have ever found bibs to be hotter than shorts. Any possible added heat is easily negated by the extra comfort (I live in Columbia, SC - it gets hot and humid...when it gets hot/humid enough it won't matter what you wear, you're still going to be hot). I don't always wear them - I only have 1 pair. For commuting I try to wear my oldest pair of cycling shorts I have...I slimmed down enough that they are officially a size too big and I don't care if they wear out. For reference, my commute is 11 miles each way, and I would just rather be in kit than street clothes. I am going to bring a change of clothes for work and take a shower there anyway, so I may as well be comfortable on my ride.

You can probably get some free bibs from your local lobster/crab restaurant. But they will be made of plastic and really don't breathe that well.

I used to be skeptical of bibs till I tried them. Now I only wear them.

As noglider kinda mentioned, regular bike shorts 'dig in' to my waist and make my stomach feel uncomfortable. I think if you're a cyclist with a slim waist/abs of steel, it might not be a real issue, but I have a slight gut so the bibs are just more comfy. Performance bike's own brand is a good compromise on expense/quality, fwiw.

I use bibs on my commute. It's my personal preference.

Here is another bib convert. Tried it, liked it and use it. The problem is that the good ones cost almost a bill if not a little over. So I can of save the bibs (one very good, the other good but not like the $110 Pearl Iz) for the longer rides in the weekends, or use it early on the week, so it will be clean for the longer ride.

The majority of my riding these days is in street clothes, usually jeans or khakis and an oxford shirt. When I do where kit it's only bibs for me for nearly two decades now. Tried 'em once and that was that. No reason to go backwards.

They are great. The pockets on the bibs allow me to just wear tank-top when riding or a t-shirt. Win-Win.
