asking for a friend

I have a friend who trying to free up some capital and is parting with his bikes but he asked me to ask you all what you think he could sell them for.

I have thought this would make a good bad weather commuter but it really doesnt gain me much (personally as much to try to convince the wife that I need it)

It is a Schwinn Paramount: Series 70Shimano XTBlack w/Orange Spider. 1991. Currently fitted with hybrid tires, <100 miles use

I don't know. I thought the Paramount name was reserved for their top of the line road bikes. Any Schwinn I've ever seen had the Schwinn logo prominent on the down-tube and the model in smaller lettering elsewhere on the frame. If you get from that that I don't think you have a genooine Schwinn P-mount you would be correct. I am willing to be convinced, however. Regardless, I wouldn't use up valuable marriage capital on that thing. A bike like that I am authorized to make a cash purchase without approval, because the most I'd be forking over is $50.

There's really not a lot there that can be seen from the pictures. Straps and clips?? Trek hybrid saddle?? Ergon, or not, grips. 10 year, or older, dry rotted tires and tubes??? Photo from wrong side of bike. Speeds? 100 vs. 2000 miles....20X difference on paper, not a lot in the bike world. More, if it's needed.

I yield to Leisesturm, he outbid me.

I am working with the pictures he took. cut me some slack. I already told him he took sorry pictures

If he listed it on Craigslist what do you think he could hope to see?

I am not planning on buying it I am holding out for a touring bike that is one that I am willing to use some marriage capital on. She could probably be persuaded too with number of miles I have ridden this year and she already sees my bike as my #1 mode of transit to work over our car.

The answers above are not market value. I would suggest searching Craigslist for comparable bikes

He'd be lucky to get $150. Most likely $100.

It depends a lot on the city, so I'd agree that checking craigslist for prices is a good idea. Just remember: the prices you see are what people are asking, not necessarily what anyone is willing to pay! In Minneapolis, I just sold a 1990 Trek Antelope mountain bike. I replaced all the cables, the shifters, and the brake levers, and everything worked great. I started at $150, and had to lower my price over a couple weeks before someone finally bought it at $120.

Schwinn Paramount were a fairly high end mtb in its day. I stil see one on the trail once in a while. You may try checking the classic and vintage or MTB Forums

I don't think it is a fake. It is a Schwinn Paramount PDG Series 70 mountain bike:

PDG Series Bikes ? 1989-94
[h=1]PDG Series Bikes – 1989-94[/h]During the late 80′s, many Schwinn dealers felt that Schwinn should add a second brand for higher-end niche bikes, a rapidly growing product category. It was also felt that these bikes would have to come from Asia, not the US, for reasons of cost. Schwinn started this by importing a few bikes called Prologue during the late 80′s. At the same time, Schwinn successfully expanded the use of the PDG (Paramount Design Group) name for parts, accessories and clothing starting 1987.
In 1990, Schwinn committed to importing a line of complete bikes under the Paramount name for the 1991 model year. The line consisted of complete bikes, both road an off-road, all of which had the “Series” designation.

Sorry to resurrect this; but a '90 Trek Antelope (800 series) is not comparable. A PDG Series 70 is comparable to a Trek 970.

Yes, I see, asking price for the 70 series should have a CL asking price over $200- and settle for a bit under $200-; analogous to your experience.

This is the wrong forum for a PDG 70 series; lousy commuter - no rack mounts, no fender mounts. Should be in C&V or MTB. The 800 series Treks are great commuters; some of the 900 are too.
