Don't park in the bike lane in Paris!

I saw this on Twitter so who knows if it's true or not but it seemed worthy of being passed along for your viewing pleasure.

That is towing with style! I wonder what a lift that that does to the undercarriage of a car? Doesn't seem like the best idea, but hey, c'est la vie

I doubt you're correct. There are reflections of the straps.

I saw identical towing vehicles in use in Paris in the 1990's removing illegally parked cars. Takes less than 2 minutes from start til the towed car is transported away.

It would be extra sweet if they took the vehicle someplace and crushed it to the size of a window air conditioner.

I wouldn't be so sure. Not because they care about cyclists, but big cities in general are absolutely draconian about parking. Park illegally in Toronto and you'll get a swarm of "Blue Hornets" (bylaw officers) in a hurry.

Who towed the cars then? Was it the city or their version of the Lincoln Park Pirates?

The tow trucks in DC back up to a parked car, and without the driver even getting out, lift the front wheels and tow the car away. Less than 10 seconds all told (unless the parking brake is on). By far the most efficient governmental department in DC.

Absolutely nothing. Shops lift cars from the bottom to be worked on. Europeans tow this way because most of the cars are front wheel drive and manual so they're parked in gear with the parking brake on, thus the wheels won't move easily. Solution: crane them onto a flatbed. The Japanese don't even mess around with emergency cones, they'll just rock up next to the offending ride, swing the arm over, pick the car up onto the bed and drive off, all within 3 minutes, with a chalk note on the parking spot to let the owner know where the car went. If it's raining or someone else parks there, oh well.

Dunno and didn't care. I didn't ask the driver for identification and I didn't know a word of French. I do know the process was fast and efficient; less than 2 minutes from start to finish.

If you ever visit Paris there's a very good chance you'll see this live. Given how often they do it I'm quite surprised that people aren't more careful about where they park.

I got to witness the wonder of swarming parking authorities sweeping a piazza clean in Rome. I parked illegally on the piazza along with a small herd of like minded offenders to pick something up in a street market. When I returned I was just in time to talk my French plated company vehicle off of the hook of the tow truck picking it up. The driver was nicer to me than he gets paid to be.

Somebody once told me that Rome had 3 cars registered in the city for every 2 legal parking places. I believe it. Illegal parking is endemic.

Sooo.... not only is (was) there a car parked in the bike lane, but now there is also a large truck blocking one or perhaps even TWO travel lanes. Great job guys!

South Korea needs this. The 'bike lanes' are everywhere but full of parked cars.

That is why bicycles are equipped with mechanisms for steering and slowing down, and bicyclists are equipped with vision to detect objects that need to be avoided through the steering and stopping mechanisms.

What would you suggest as an alternative method for these cities to quickly remove illegally parked cars?

I pointed it out to you because you evidently missed it.

Are you saying his post was irrelevant or unintelligent?
