It's not as simple and easy as you think. If I moved closer to work the cost of living would increase a lot. The closest housing subdivision from my workplace is within 2-3 KM distance but those houses are selling for $500-$700 thousand dollars. There is also ONLY ONE road to get from those houses to the industrial park where I work and that particular road is extremely dangerous for cycling. Some of the condo apartments that are within 6 KM form my work sell for close to $350-$400 thousand dollars. That's why I live further from work and ride 17-20 miles everyday.

Incorrect...FYI when some of my family members go for 2-3 month visit to their home country in eastern europe they don't even drive while they are there, because public transit is so good and everything is within walking distance. It's so easy to hop on the train or a bus and go from one country to another. But once they come back here to Canada, they all go back to their dependence on cars.

I saw a guy riding his bike in a tweed jacket yesterday. He wasn't sweating because he was riding at 5 mph and taking up the entire bike lane on the bridge with 5 bikes following, waiting for an opportunity to pass. What a jerk. I seriously hope bike commuting like that never catches on here. The guy really belongs in a Prius.

All the things I saw on the website in the OP looked pretty horrific. Pretty far from stylish IMHO

Me too. Doesn't matter how slow I go anyway, as soon as I start climbing the hills I'm sweaty. No sense in wearing "normal" clothes, I'm going to shower and change into work clothes at work anyway...
