Unfortunately I'm not getting it! It gets cold fast and tastes funny!
I'm looking for the perfect bottle that will sit in my cage, keeps the coffee hot and doesn't spoil the flavor. And is drinkable while peddling to work. Any ideas?

There are a couple of threads on this hidden in the archives. Don't believe the suggestions of using a Camelback though, we think they're kidding.

I've got a Nissan thermos that is perfect. Like it was made for a cage. Only downside is it doesn't have a quick-sip top. The upside of that is that is a completely bombproof, doesn't leak whatsoever. I can and do confidently throw it into a pack full of books when off the bike.

You could get a handlebar mounted cup holder, then just use any old travel mug.

Keeps coffee hot for two hours, still lukewarm+ for at least another hour. Our households have been constant use 3-5 days a week for years and holding up fine, and the one it that review is still going strong 5 years in.

Having a blood concentration that must carry nearly toxic levels of caffeine myself, I too faced a similar dilemma.

Sir... might I suggest the double-walled stainless steel Hydroflask https://www.hydroflask.com, or the insulated Kleen Kanteen Klean Kanteen Insulated: Stainless Steel Insulated Bottle and Mug. One can even get a variety of sippy cup tops for the Kleen Kanteen, in addition to the sealed cup.

These have served me well... much better than the IV drip out of the insulated Camelback worn under my jacket on my way to work at -30F in January here in the frozen wastelands of the north (riding uphill both ways into a headwind across polar bear and wolf pack infested glacial sheets).

Seriously, either of these fit quite nicely into a bottle cage, and keep all kinds of stuff warm or cold, but you will wear the paint off the bottle, so think about the unfinished stainless ones if you care.

I've got one of these. The 16 oz. fits in my bottle cage, and keeps my coffee hot for a few hours while I'm at work.

I'm almost sold on that klean kanteen.

Do you have the 20 oz one?
And it will fit in a standard water bottle cage?
The coffee will still be steamy hot after an hour of riding into the wind in 0 degree F to 15 degree F weather?

Yep. Yep, and Yep. I've never really set out to conclusively test it or anything, but I do know I've put it in a bottle cage, rode an hour to work (or longer) at much colder, and the coffee has been plenty hot when I got there -- and stayed hot for a few more hours while I work on it. It is Alaska bike commuter/outdoor winter sports guy/coffee freak extraordinaire endorsed.

I think the hydroflasks are a bit better, but they don't have the sippy cup lids as far as I've seen. I might favor them because they also make these:


Which is how Alaska bike commuters get their beer home. There is a positive Pavlovian association. I also think they are a bit better insulated and a little more durable (not that the Kleen Kanteen is fragile or poorly insulated in any way). From what you have described, it seems like either will meet your needs just fine.

I use a Bubba Hero 16 oz specifically for this purpose. It's a little snug in my bottle cage. It's an insulated travel mug you can get at Target, although it looks like they may not make it in that size anymore. It almost keeps the coffee too hot.

These things are awesome. I first heard of them when in the Coast Guard. We would fill up for any trips (it was a small boat station) during the winter. Keeps coffee hot for quite awhile, spill proof, well constructed, etc etc

It is a little snug, but it fits, and I like it.
I should mention...I have been using mine for over 5 years now and it is a bit scratched up on the outside, but there are zero problems with it. You should be able to find them at Target

+1. If you end ever carry it in an external drink holder of a bag like the one below make sure it's secure. I've lost one over some rough terrain. In a standard bottle cage it would fine.

I have one of those Contigos for my non-bike life but don't want hot drinks on the bike. Seems like it would be a jarring contrast, somehow.

It takes about 20ish minutes (often more) for coffee to cool enough in one to drink it. Makes for a good midway drink, or just to have coffee ready when i get to work

+1, fits cage perfectly. I was surprised how well Nissan made thermos/coffee things. I've made tea and coffee at 7 in the morning and it is still hot around 3 o clock in the afternoon. I think it's supposed to stay hot for 12 hours or something?

I find not having a quick-sip is pretty nice when commuting. Not only have I burned my mouth trying to drink coffee on the go, I commute from DC to VA, and am fortunate to have some views. Nothing like taking a quick pit stop on the steps of the Lincoln having a sip of coffee as the sun rises to slow things down before heading into a busy day of work.

I use a stainless steel Trudeau travel mug. It fits in the bottle cage, keeps coffee hot and doesn't leak or dribble.

my wife lost my coffee cup a while ago. but yesterday she used our keurig points and some $ to purchase one of the CONTIGO cups. I will be interested in seeing if it fits my bike cage. i hope it works well. I really miss my old cup.
i really wanted one of the insulated Klean Kanteens but we could not figure to spend that much compared to the Keurig deal.

Contigo's are terrific. The fit into a bottle cage is a little tight, but it fits. I have used mine in metal and carbon cages.
