Solar Bike Path in the Netherlands
CNN Story here: Solar road opens in the Netherlands - CNN.com
The headline says "road" but it's actually a bike path, or maybe more accurately, a section of road for bikes. The idea is to use roadway surfaces for generating electricity. This one was meant for testing. It's only a 230 ft long section.
Kind of a cool idea but I wonder how durable it will prove to be. Maybe that's why it's part of a bike path and not something meant for a lot of car traffic.

I agree with the objections. Start covering the parking lots before you put this stuff under our tires

The guys installing the solar road are working in the shade. I see a problem there. Guess the next project is to cut down the trees.

contiuniously variable
Funny thing about PV panels... They don't need direct sunlight to work. Sure direct 90 degree sunlight is ideal, but the chemistry in the panels doesn't care where the photons come from. They work on overcast days, on rainy days, even when covered in snow or ice. For maximum efficiency you want clean panels in direct sunlight, but please don't think they require such to function.

In a path an array of Piezoelectric patches seems Ideal. as a wheel rolls across it , a little electricity is generated ..
They are used in amplifying most acoustic guitars already, a Man Made ceramic , bonded to a strip of brass
1 wire soldered to the ceramic , the other to the backing piece-conductor .
Given NL already uses interlocking Brick Pavers for a lot of their paths and village streets , Its just something to add below the paver tile.
perhaps bonded to the bottom , then the underlying sand beneath it pushes back .

Piezoelectrics and solar cells are both nifty inventions but making a road out of either is silly. As someone mentioned in the other thread, making a canopy of normal solar cells is a much better idea. Stick your piezos to the back side of that. You still get a normal road surface and the sun is out of your eyes. Can you imagine the glare at sunset from a glass road?
