those are the rims I have. Sun ringle DS-2. I want to get rid of the standard MTB tires and put on slicks. What size will safely fit this rim?

I like Panaracer Tservs in 1.75. They are Kevlar beaded and fairly light at ~450 gm, I have weighed mine. A lot of other slicks I have looked at are in the 600+ gm range. They roll well and give a nice cushy ride. They will fit your rims, my commuters have 26 x 1.5 rims.

the wheel says the size is 559 x 23. I am assuming thats 23mm width. does the tire have to be 23, or will other sizes fit and how off from the 23mm can one go? or is 559 the important number and 559 x any number will fit the rim? I apologize for the elementary questions, but I have no clue on this basic matter.

Yes, have a look here Tire Sizing Systems for a matrix of tire/rim sizing, about 2/3 down the page. For 23mm tires, you really wouldn't want to fit anything that small to a MTB, 1.3 is about the smallest you can go, but as you get smaller, the higher pressure you need to inflate them to, and the harsher the ride.

The setup that #Paramount1973 looks nice, the 1.75 tires will give a comfortable ride at a reasonable pressure.

That depends on the tires you have on there already. Odds are that what you have will fit. I would pull the tube and look at it. It should give you a range, typically they will say something like '1.5-2.1'. it is unlikely to be too small.

IF the tubes have an unknown history or are on a very different size tire, I'll put new tubes in.
@ about $5/tube, it just makes sense to me.
Sometimes old tubes get "brittle" for lack of a better term and may start to leak if "re-arranged". Especially if you are putting "folds" into them trying to fit them into a smaller tire.

I might be incorrect, but the inside size of those rims may be around 19mm (23mm - 4mm = 19mm).* That would mean up to 26x1.75 according to the size chart on the Sheldon Brown site.

*The inside width of the rims is smaller than the outside width.

Schwalbe has a better chart:
Tire Dimensions | Schwalbe North America

If those are MTB rims, they'll def be designed to run tires wider than 2".

Olive Drab, what are you looking for? Performance or comfort? Skinnier tires will be lighter, but wider tires will ride smoother. Also, what's your budget? I love my 2" Schwalbe Marathon Supremes, but they're expensive. Telling us what you expect and how much you can spend would be helpful.

Hi
these are MTB, XC rims to be specific. I am not worried about performance, so puncture resistance and then comfort would be the priority in that order. The intent is to use my MTB for running to the store and other errands around town less than a 5mi radius from my house. Budget, I didnt really think of one. $100 or so for the 2.

I'd suggest Vittoria Randonneurs(regular, not the Cross model),Schwalbe Marathons(puncture protection) or Big Apples(comfort) and Serfas Drifters, all of which I've had good luck with. I've never used them, but have heard good things about Panaracer RiBMo and Continental Contacts.

When an ISO/ETRTO measurement is given on the rim, it's generally the inner width.

I used these Innova Swifter tires for a while. They were kinda fun. Big upgrade from the radical knobbies I started commuting with. I eventually got a road bike though. 34 miles round trip on 26" wheels just wasn't cutting it

heh I started commuting 31 miles on my road bike, then tried it once on my 26" utility bike with 26x1.5 Serfas Drifters, and it SUCKED!! Small wheels, small gearing, platform pedals, yuck.
