Treadmill Motivation...Found! (See if this works for you.)
Had to share a positive experience I had this morning! When it is too wet/cold/snowy/icy for me to bike to work, or logistics prevent it I walk on the treadmill in the basement. I find it dull, boring and a poor substitute for riding. We've had a stationary bike and I had the same problem. I tried listening to my usual podcast...blah. TV? ...Yech. After missing a few days of riding and with inclement weather forcasted I headed downstairs this morning and started to look for more boring crap to watch. I have a Youtube enabled TV (actually my phone plugs in via HDMI). I thought about biking videos. I find most of the unedited rides boring, but then I wondered if they would be boring if I were on the treadmill.
I found an 18 minute pre-dawn ride from some German city recorded with a chest-mount camera and it was great! As I walked my eyes kept checking for cross traffic, car doors and potholes. I found the rocking of the camera felt much more natural as I walked vs, just watching at a computer or on the phone. On this particular ride no street or path was ridden for more than 90 seconds which added variety. The foreign cars, signs and cityscape really held my interest. The time went by so fast! I then found a 13 minute commute in Portland, OR. It was a sunny fall morning shot with a helmet cam, but I found myself doing the same thing, checking cross traffic, watching vehicles, bikes and pedestrians up ahead.
I know it's silly, but my body really got into it as opposed to watching a TV show. I've tried dramas, comedies, talk shows, documentaries etc, it always felt as if my workout was in the way. But with the commuting videos I felt "in rhythm" with the video, and thought less about my body and workout. And watching the unedited videos were more interesting than just watching them while doing nothing.
I'm gonna have to find that Sydney riverfront commute that was so beautiful and try that one on the treadmill.

My treadmill is at the gym on the second floor overlooking the lap pool... lots of motivation down there.

I swam daily in my 20s at the Cedar Rapids YMCA. As my eyesight got worse I stubbed my toes more and more on the way to the pool. Eventually I decided to wear my glasses out there. For two years I thought I was swimming every morning with a dozen beautiful young gals about my age. Turned out they were beautiful women in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

Back on topic, I usually watch bike race videos on YouTube, like this one:
A bike commute video might be a bit too real.

I ride rollers from time to time. I can see myself crashing as I veer to the left to avoid a car entering from the right in the video.

Treadmills are useless and boring, the best use for them would be as a boat anchor...I can get a much better cardio/strength workout with kettlebells.

What about movies? I've got my TV in front of the TM connected to a HD server with 100's of movies that I can access. I prefer to be outside riding or running, but sometimes the weather doesn't allow for it.
