I'd always choose cold over snow in a heartbeat-- I'd take -20 over 2" of fresh dry snow every time. Skidding around on that dry, packed slush, with traffic on your left, never stops being terrifying!

I'm sorry, but do you remember the last two Aprils??? The last two springs in Minneapolis were sole-crushing with all the late snow.

But on the other side we had a great time last April, we went to Welch Village to snowboard/ski on April 5. In MN, most resorts are closed the second week of March, and many mountain resorts are closed or closing in early April, so there's that going for you.

Yeah, plants don't know when to bloom or drop leaves anymore, and the increasingly erratic extreme weather.... Hopefully we'll get our heads out our bums & take action before we sign our own extinction edict.

I have a friend who's a ski instructor at Welch. It's very rare that they'll stay open into April even if there's still snow. Lots of their employees can't stick around. Many plan ski trips out West.
While we aren't having a polar vortex this year, winter is definitely full bore. I think what's been happening is we get cold air down from Ontario vs being on the edge of a larger push South with the northern middle states getting the main body of Arctic air.

Temperature is dropping fast tonight, and the wind is picking up. My commute yesterday morning defeated me, and I left my bike at work until the snow melts off the streets and paths. I am really tired of winter. And February is coming, which can be even brutaler than January.

Take a lot at long term weather statistics and you'll see this just ain't true. Sure we have spells where weather is unusual for a few years in a row. But here in Va it's been below normal for six out of the last ten years.

Things like you talk about have happened forever.

They're predicting up to a foot of snow here with 30+ mph winds and cold temperatures for the next week. That sure looks like winter to me.

Pacific NW coast it was dry when it hit 27, winter storms tend to be rain out of the southwest and warmer..

so for the snow shovelers ... winter stays Inland from Here ..

Not to get all P&R here, but no... no it has not. I would love if we had no impact on global climate... but we do. It's not just co2 either... its the countless landfills, mines, sewers, and leaky gas utility pipelines spewing methane out as well. Methane is far more potent than co2 in the aspect of greenhouse effect warming. The arctic is also warming faster than everywhere else because the mirror of ice just is not what it used to be..... sea water is dark. There are hints that the reason temperatures have only started to increase exponentially relatively recently is that over time the oceans have become saturated with co2, so its no longer going into the ocean, but staying in the gaseous part of the atmosphere.

If you realy do the research, you'll realize the fantasy of no climate change is as dangerous as it is stupid. /P&R rant

Yeah, I was thinking of this when I was using my GFs heavy duty snowblower this morning. I had to go slow because the snow was so deep and heavy, and that was just the first time of using it today.

Over 3' of snow in the last week (12"+ yesterday) blowing, drifting and temp is currently 5F. Certainly doesn't feel practically over...

Yeah, well we might get a paltry couple of inches today, but it's looking pretty balmy next week.

I'm not a climate change denier in the least but I tend not to read much into current weather events.

For example, as cold as last winter was, and as much was we kept hearing about "the polar vortex" it was only the 4th coldest in my lifetime. There were parts of the country (and the world) where it wasn't cold at all. When I was young we had a few cold winters like that strung together so in my mind last winter was kind of like getting back to normal.

By contrast, as warm and dry as the winter has been here, there are obviously other parts of the country that have been hit hard by winter storms. It's also not the warmest winter in recent memory and there were one or two in my youth just like it. Like the year I got cross country skis for Christmas.

I blame the Internet for the mass hysteria generated by weather events that are much less rare then they are made out to be. Funny how they seem to happen every month.

The weather men are now promising us a Pineapple Express on Friday. First rain since mid-December. Three or four inches here in Sac. Likely the snow elevation will be high so it won't do much for the nearly-absent snowpack.

After that? Sunny and sixties.
