started working at Bell Labs in Murray Hill as a kid in middle school (parents thought I'd be a Sheldon Cooper)

then went to school to be a rocket scientist but ended up in pharma due to my less than stellar IQ

have only worked for two large companies in my career, but planning to go solo within the next 5 years

Interesting thread and fun variety of occupations.

I build websites and web-based applications. My primary job is for a company that does pre-employment screenings. But I also do contract work for a variety of clients and industries.

Love Durham University and Durham Cathedral! My family and I lived in Newcastle for a year, and enjoyed making the short drive to Durham occasionally on the weekend. My kids were fairly young at the time, but I still remember how much they enjoyed rowing along the River Wear. Good times! Seems a world away now that I'm back in the US.

I work for an Oil & Gas Engineering Company. (primarily on the IT/GIS technology side)

Best city in the country IMHO - perfect weather year round. I actually am disappointed because they are calling for temps in the high 30's this weekend. BRRRR.

Yes. The north has the great sites (Great Wall, TerraCotta Warriors). But we have Shangri La. Way different lifestyle here in Kunming than anywhere on the east coast of China to be sure. Much more laid back and much less 'westernized'.

Never realized the weather was so temperate in Kunming, my mom and in-laws have both been there I and recalled seeing in photos snow in the spring so assumed it was cold all year round, sounds like a potential destination this summer

No kidding? I bought my first guitar at the Cedar Rapids store, not long before they closed.

As for me, I'm a software engineer at a company that started out in radios, but has since expanded into avionics and other fields. They treat me pretty well.

Adminstrator for Auto Parts manufacturer. Our dept builds manufacturing equipment and plastic injection molds. I sit at a desk most of the day ordering everything from steel to ballpoint pens. Feels great to hop on the bike at the end of the day. Almost 20 years with the company.

Now i work in a boring Tech Job as a Project Manager and i love it! i work with a much more mature crowd, i just wish more of them biked in since we work right next to a trail, then i could have some buddies on the cold windy mornings in.

Excellent! We closed the CR shop years ago, focusing on and expanding the Dubuque location. If you still play and are in the area, stop by!

Yeah it is beautiful. I have lived here for nearly a decade and we have had snow 1 time which amounted to about an inch and was gone by noon. A couple of other times we got flurries. The pictures you refer too could be of some of the higher elevation areas. Lots of mountains here so it is easy to go find snow if you are so inclined.

Summer weather will be high 60's at night and high 70's to low 80's during the day. It is rainy season so expect some rain. Plenty of good stuff and see and do depending on what you are into. Also, I strongly suggest that if you do come during the summer that you do so early summer - i.e. before mid-July - as the school break is from mid July to September 1 so tourist areas have much higher traffic. Also less chance of rain early summer as well...i.e. mid June.

If you decide to come, let me know as having lived here a long time I have lots of contacts with people that can help arrange various outings and things for you. Bottom line: I got the insider knowledge and/or know people who do.

I'm a full-time student in community college and a restaurant server. I like to think that I'm also a quasi-professional brewer, but I don't sell my beer for profit; only to raise funds for charity rides. Aids Lifecycle is the current event, followed by BikeMS: Waves to Wine.

I was prior military until I was honorably discharged in fall of 2013. I now work full time as an attendant at a military fitness center. This is a dream for me as I can commute to work and use the lockers and showers after my bike commutes. I am pursuing my Bachelors degree in Public Health.
