How far & often do you commute to work?

Hi All,

I was talking to a guy that works in my office about commuting with me. He only lives about 5 minutes from my house. He has had many excuses not to do it in he past and now he is saying that it is too far to ride.

Our ride would be 60 km (40 miles) round trip. I try to commute every second day either Tuesday & Thursday or Monday Wednesday & Friday depending on how much riding I get in on the weekend.

Would you consider this a long commute? How far & how often do you commute?

T.J.

I'm just trying to gauge if I'm an Obsesive Compusive Cyclist or an Average Joe Commuter... Thanks

Since you're not doing it every day, I wouldn't say you are obsesive/compulsive. I had a similar feeling about my running, because I would still do it even when I was carrying some injuries albeit minor.

Good on you for doing 40 miles! Mine is around 14, 3 times a week.

Come to think of it I reckon I'm getting a bit obsessed with cycling because I'm thinking about it so much (what gear to get etc). I'm also spending too much time on this forum!

Short commute for me -- 6 miles / 10 km. I do it every working day.

5 days a week, 40 miles round trip. This takes slightly longer than driving, but it also takes care of my exercise, so it's a net time savings.

Every day to work, but a short one - if 8 Philly blocks is a mile then it's 4 1/3 miles each way. My saturday class is about 6 miles each way, and I make other little trips. My commute might lengthen to 8 miles each way next year, which will be much more fun.

35 round trip in summer, spring, & fall. 2-3 days a week. Once the time change happens there is not enpough daylight for me to commute says my wife. She's right though, the drivers and the roads up here suck and I would probaby get killed.

22 miles four or five times a week depending upon schedules and sometimes the weather. If the coomute seems too long you could think about driving part way and then ride the rest. This might be particularly useful if your neighbor does not ride a lot. Its likely that once he starts the commute and his endurance builds that the longer commute will not be a big deal.

not sure the distance, but it takes me 14 mins to get there and 18 to get back, as long as there's no snow, and it's not really rainning, although i can bike in a light shower

13 miles round trip for me, all but about a mile of which is rail trail. Mostly flat. I'd need a good excuse for not riding. I ride Monday through Friday. Rain. Snow. Below zero. I'm a die-hard.

OK. Thanks for the input. I'm not as crazy as I thought but just a bit nutty to commute 40 miles round trip. I just need to figure out some better comebacks when people give me "the look" when I tell them I commute 40 miles round trip. Comebacks like ... "I know you are but what am I?" or "Takes one to know one" are not effective. Neener, neener, neener......

My commute today is from my kitchen to my home offfice. My daughter came down with a nasty flu last night. I can't believe how totally disappointed I was that I was not going to be able to commute today. I just totally geeked out my commuter bike last weeked by putting on full fenders. It's suppose to shower off and on today too. Darn!!!

With the gas prices as high as they are, I think folks are crazy to drive to work.
$0.90 CDN per liter or $3.00 US per Gallon here...

T.J.

Hey, westman2003, I'm in Calgary too. Do you commute to downtown?

TJ, I wouldn't blame your coworker for not wanting to do a 40 mile commute by bike. That's a very daunting distance for a newbie! I'm almost dreading the day I move to a new house, which will surely be further away than I already live from work. Hopefully not TOO far!

About 13 miles round trip minimum, plus extra miles if I'm feeling up to it. Every working day for the past 11 years, although I used to live closer. In the past three years I've missed one day due to weather, and one day because I locked my bike in the garage and couldn't get it out. If I'm too sick to ride I don't go to work.
