It seems odd that you were doing well controlling the right lane as you approached the intersection, but then as you crossed it seemed like you were up against the curb. That probably gave the van driver the impression that they could squeeze past you.
I'm assuming from directly behind me in the same lane, it's the lane that aggressive drivers use to shoot past 2-3 slow cars before it merges back into 1 lane just ahead. I normally do well controlling my lane, but I think there is some broken pavement/potholes there that makes sense to move slightly to the right to get around.

I would suggest a mirror if you don't use one, so you can be aware of anyone behind who might try to zoom around you, and perhaps signal to them to hold back until it's safe to go on by.

While a mirror may be a good idea in general, I don't agree that any cyclist should be playing traffic cop and telling drivers when it is safe to pass.

I think the backpack and fold-away mirror saved the OP. Not all mirrors collapse that easily and he got lucky here.

When Tullys coffee had their roasting plant on Airport way in Seattle, a 4 lane arterial, they would send out a road guard wearing a high-vis vest carrying a stop sign to control traffic so trucks could back to their docks. Every time I delivered there, they would have a new story about how some aggressive driver....or cyclist....almost ran them down.
A cyclist controlling aggressive drivers?

Thanks for putting it there instead of just concentrating on your short term happiness. Let's hope it generates enough attention to get a better response out of the cops.
