The differece betwen these two: help?

Hi, just need some help figuring out the difference between these two brake dyno hubs.

Sturmey Archer | X-FDD

Sturmey Archer | XL-FDD

The size specs, i cant visualize them, and the form factor, why do they look different?

- Andy

One braking surface is 70 mm wide and the other one is 90 mm. Therefore the wider should provide better stopping power due to larger contact area during braking.

Check the xl-fdd spec PDF it lists the specs side by side.

The X-FDD has a 70mm drum brake, the XL-FDD has a 90mm drum brake. I have both sizes, built up in wheels, if you need a side-by-side pix let me know.

So basically the bigger one has more stopping power?

I'd say the smaller one probably won't stop more slowly but will fade from heat sooner if you have a heavy load on it. Get the bigger one if you're carrying a lot of stuff or go down gigantic hills.

The weight difference is less than 5 oz, but I wouldn't want to carry that weight around if it were not necessary.
