I pared down my bikes to 4. Mtb, Roadie, Touring/ commuter, and errand bike. There's not a LOT of overlap between them, such as I CAN get groceries with the touring bike, but I fit more in my giant wald basket on the errand bike. I can take the roadie to work, but the touring bike has fenders and bags, so I wouldn't need a messenger bag or worry if it rains during the day. The MTB is..well it's a MTB, no overlap there. The SO hasn't made a fuss about them, since I haven't added more bikes.. and I got her a new Cannondale Synapse for her birthday. We have 7 bikes between the two of us soooo...

That's treading on shaky ground. Suppose your wife gets interested in seeing more of this forum? And sees how obsessed we are. Any leverage you thought you had is now gone.

Five bikes here currently. The good bike. The old Mooney which is now my Saturday Market truck and sees occasional off road and other use. 2 winter/rain/city bikes, the workhorse fixie and the "new" geared bike aka the gravel grinder. And the fun/hard bike, the custom fix gear road bike. So in terms of backups:

Good bike is backed up by the gravel grinder
The gravel grinder is backed up by the Mooney
The fun fix gear is backed up by the winter fixie (for fix gear riding), by the good bike (for long rides)
The winter fixie is backed up by the gravel grinder. Also the fun fix gear.

If I put racks on the gravel grinder, it would serve as backup for the Mooney.
