Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Schwalbe G-One All-Around "performance" vs "evolution"

They've got two versions of this tire with quite a difference in price. Schwalbe site gives the "evolution" version higher marks in rolling resistance, grip, and protection, and while the "evolution" has a 3-star "service life", the "performance" version has service life left blank entirely (??).

Anyone have real-world experience of both versions? FWIW I would be running with tubes.

I have not used the Performance version but only the Evolution.

Evolution are wonderful rolling - light, grippy and supple - but they wear very fast.

I've had five of them. One was delivered with a broken bead so that's a 20% failure rate out of the box.

Yeah, I was just wondering if anyone thought the Performance ones were inferior enough as to not be worth the price difference.

Well, the Performance ones were $28 from Merlin, I've got a pair on the way which I'll be running with tubes, I'll let everyone know my opinions. Unfortunately I won't have ever tried the Evo "Microskin TLEasy" version to compare them to.

Tim, do you find they wear more from road or gravel? (Maybe a better question is what percentage of your riding is road vs. gravel.)

My bike came stock with Schwalbe Super Swans. No noticeable wear on rides shorter than 15miles. But I went on a 35 mile group ride a few weeks back and was shocked at how much tread went away.

The rear tire would likely not have lasted 1500 miles. 850 miles and the micro-knobbies on the back tire were 75% or more gone. I would take photos but had already thrown the tire away. It was the "Why are my tires fused to the rim" tire and had to be cut off.

OTOH, the front was hardly worn at all.

I've been using the 30 mm S-1's (now called G-1 Speed) tubeless for road use and really like them so I got a set of 35mm G-1 Evolutions for some off road riding. I dry mounted them on my Boyd wheels then without ever riding them went off on a 3 week vacation. When I returned one was flat so I tried to re-inflate it only to have it blow off the rim several times using only a hand pump. Never have been able to do that to a tire. I switched rims and same blow offs but the other tire mounts up fine. I noted Tim's comment about bead issues so I guess these tires might have quality issues.

Yep, mine blew off the rim.

It was like a fire ******* going off in my hand - scared the crud out of me.

I noticed this and thought it was just a stubborn bead not seating but the opposite side blew off the rim.
