Drop-bar 2x11 with 11-36T cassette via 10-spd mtn bike derailleur--not working for me

The internet seems to agree that you can mate a SRAM Rival 22 dropbar shifter with a 11-36T cassette by using a 10-speed SRAM mountain bike derailleur.

I just tried this, and can't get it to work. If I index properly for upshifting across all gears properly, it doesn't downshift from the 36T until I double shift, and then it jumps two gears skipping the 32T and hopping to the 28T. If I reduce tension with the barrel adjuster, I can get the 36T to 32T to happen in one shift, but then the lower 4 gears rub and the downshifting in all of the faster gears just seems off.

I just took it to the bikeshop, and they checked it over and came to the consensus that the derailleur won't work with the cassette. We're going to try a rival 22 with the 11-36T, but I am skeptical that the rival 22 rear will work with the 11-36T.

Has anyone else experienced this, that has tried? Would a 10-speed X7/X9 behave any different than the 10-speed GX Type 2.1 2x10 derailleur?

So you're currently trying a Rival22 road shifter with an 11-36 11s cassette using a 10s Sram mtb RD? Why? Use a medium (long) cage road sram RD, it'll work fine I can almost guarantee.

did you adjust the b-screw and limits as well? Set the upper limit so it barely shifts into the largest cog so it sits closer to the previous cog.

Yeah, did the 6mm spec gap, and then tried extremes (super close) and super far away) with no behavior change. Some others seem to report a rival 22 derailleur can handle 36T, so I that's the next thing to chase trying, I guess.

I have a medium cage Apex 10 speed and use a 11-34T cassette and shifts great with no problems. Not sure if it can handle 36T but a long cage will, guarantee...

Medium and long are the same thing now. (There is no long, just short and medium.)

My cage is rated at 32T max but I pushed it to 34T. I wonder if it can do 36T? I've heard a Shimano medium cage can do 36T but have not verified it yet.

It can, and I'd be surprised if your RD couldn't.

are you talking in generalities or for apex only? SRAM definitely has 3 different length road RDs with varying max cog sizes

Hmm, I guess maybe I was talking mostly about Shimano but I wasn't aware Sram had three different lengths. Mind you I'm talking about newer generations. I thought Sram had short cage and WiFli...

for example the force cx1 clutch RDs come in short up to 28t, med up to 36t, and long up to 42t. Shimano make a short and medium in road and medium and long in mtb

And all of this is dependent on the front rings. The more tooth difference up front the more the RD will be stretched in terms of its ability to wrap the chain. So be aware of that.

Ah ok I wasn't referring to CX1 since I don't have much experience with those. Thanks for clarifying.

One reason to try this would be to have the clutch mechanism that comes with the GX MTB derailleur.

I can't see why the Exact Actuation 10sp RD would not work with the Exact Actuation 11sp Rival shifters. I guess I could test this and see for sure. I have Rival 22 on my Cosmic Stallion and I have a GX 2x10 rear derailleur on my AWOL.

True, clutch is good. I don't see why it wouldn't work either, everyone else seems to have had success with it.

I have heard that Exact Actuation 10 speed rear derailleurs and Exact Actuation 11 speed front shifters "should" work together, but months of internet searches had never found a single account of anyone who had actually tried it and found it to work.

Today I took the SRAM Rival 22 11 speed rear derailleur off of my All City Cosmic Stallion and replaced it with a GX 10 speed long cage rear derailleur. It worked fine on the work stand, so I took it out for a short ride (in the rain). Worked fine. No different than the good shifting with the 11 speed Rival RD.

I put a rival 22 11 speed back on and it works with a 12-36. Don't get the clutch that the GX offers, but oh well, at least a solution. It seems the GX is dependent upon the bike dropout geometry somewhat on whether it will work, and in my case it didn't.

Thursday I took the SRAM Rival 22 11 speed rear derailleur off of my All City Cosmic Stallion and replaced it with a 10 speed GX 10 speed long cage rear derailleur. It worked fine on the work stand, so I took it out for a short ride (in the rain). Worked fine. No different than the good shifting with the Rival RD. The only minor difficulty was having to use the inline cable adjuster near the shifter since the GX RD does not have a barrel adjuster.

Today I tried the opposite combination on another bike, Force 10 speed shifters with Rival 22 RD. This also worked perfectly.

I've done it. My buddy has done it. That's why I said earlier in this thread that it would work fine, an Exact Actuation rd just pulls whatever the shifter does. It's a thing of beauty.

Instead of buying a new rear dérailleur just buy one of those 4 or 5 dollar Chinese Road Link extensions, they give you at least 4 teeth more space. Clutch dérailleurs are for 1x bikes.
