Anyone built up a cross check?

I'm considering using my 2003 Trek 1200 parts and "trying" to build up a Surly cross check frame. Is this a stupid idea? How compatible are the parts? Any obstacles I will have to overcome. Has anyone done anything similar?

What are you trying to build it into? A general rider or a cyclo-competitor?

Just finished mine and it turned out much better than I expected. I bought it because it was a good deal. I moved some parts from an extra road bike I had and bought a cross crank and Cane Creek brakes. It's a 62cm frame and it weighed in at 19 and 1/2 pounds without pedals. It's a great riding frame and a real bargain. Can't wait to hit the trail.

a trek 1200 is a road bike, right? I built up a cross check using the parts from a road bike, but had to make some minor changes. You'll have to get new brakes (I used cantilever brakes), but other than that, you can swap out most of the parts from your trek.

I guess depending on how much you wanna stick to it being a cx bike, you would swap out the chainrings for something like a 48/38. But it depends on what you're gonna use it for.

I'd love to say that it would be a CX machine, but it will be my primary rider ie fair weather commuter, cross trainer (long road rides), the occasional triathlon, and my first CX race this fall.

I used to race XC mtb as a Jr. and fell in love with the speed of a road bike after borrowing one for a tri this summer. I can't wait to try one on fire roads, single track, long climbs.

I'm looking for the elusive bike that will do it all. Fenders, races, a tour perhaps, training, gravel, pavement etc
