Making a cyclocross bike...

I have an old, possibly vintage, bike from the 80s, and I was wondering if you would recommend that I use it to make a cyclocross bike?

It's a 1984 Maruishi Tourace, with 27' wheels. It was a $1000 bike in 1984. It has all of it's original components in good working order, too.

Perhaps, I shouldn't be in the cyclocross forum.... I'm extremely out of shape, so a super high performance bike is not what I had in mind. What I was thinking was a good touring bike with coaster bike type wheels to handle my weight(400lbs), for on road use only, to and from work 26km each way. Maybe I'd be better off with a mountain bike with 2 inch wide slicks on it?

Oh, it'll work. Not so sure about the coaster brake. But tires are readliy available - the Paselas in the 1 1/4" size should work well for you. Have a bike shop get you sized and positioned well. Then, ride and have fun.

I would visit the Clydesdale forum here at Bikeforum.com. I'm over 200 lbs & a Clyde, I'm a Cyclocross bike owner, a vintage bike owner, a commuter, I'm over fifty... There is a forum for each.

Here's a pic of the bike. I just stole the back rack for my ebike, so the back fender isn't mounted anymore.
