Crankset for 1x9 build

Right after the holidays I'm going to be building up a Gunnar Crosshairs for commuting,
light touring and general riding. Anticipate this will become my primary ride. Plan on
setting it up as a 1x9, have selected most of the components. One item I cannot quite
decide upon is the crank set; plan on a 36 t chain ring with 11-34 cassette, I also plan on
a using chain/bash guard on the outside such as a Salsa ringdinger.
So what will yield a better set up and chain line; a SS, road double, road triple or MTB crankset ?
Need 170 mm cranks.
Thanks in advance!

Get a Sram S300 Cross GXP 38-46t compact double: https://www.treefortbikes.com/119_333...XP-38-46t.html

I now have a 42t single on the above crank and I am using 2 Salsa guards.

It will give you a 38t ringgear and will be easy to convert back to a double if you want to later on.

if you want a 36t chainring, i'd look at mountain cranks. fwiw, i'm running a Truvativ Hussefelt 1.1 on my Rob Roy SS. it's got provision for a bashguard, and is designed to be run as a single-ring crank. lots of mountain cranks are nowadays.

110bcd - Sugino XD
130bcd (min ring is a 38) - Shimano Sora, Sugino RD

There was a guy selling Stronglight single speeds cranks on ebay with guards for very little. Stronglight products are great!

Truvativ has over the years made several different models of SS crankset with bashguard. You can keep your eyes open for Firex, Stylo or Hussefelt SS cranks with a single ring on Ebay.
