Hello all...

I just walked 3 miles home. Never fun.

Here is the situation. I am running Campagnolo Chorus compact carbon cranks on my cross bike with a specialities TA 42t ring and a wetzikon chainring guard by the folks at cyclocrossworld.com. Both parts were purchased from them. The chainring guard is advertised as 110 bcd, as are campy compact cranks. That been said, when i installed the guard, i noticed it did not sit well with the cranks, and i ended up having to file out one of the chainring bolt holes into an oval to make it work, as the bolt that threads into the crank arm spider was going in at an angle and threatening to cross thread the crank itself. This worked fine for a while, though tonight while climbing a hill i heard a wierd noise and my cranks slipped forward. I continued to ride for a half mile till I looked down and noticed that my chainring was wobbling from side to side. I had stripped out 3 chainring bolts simultaneously. At this point I walked home. Now that I am home, I have compared the chainring guard to the original chainrings from the crank and the holes do NOT line up. I looked up the cranks in QBP, and I did notice a little blurb about how campy's 110 bcd is non standard. Perhaps its 111 or some bull **** like that, its campy, who knows.

Anyway, the chainring guards from cyclocrossworld.com ARE NOT compatible with campy compact cranks. I am sure that the Wetzikon guards are truly 110 bcd, but I wish there was some mention of the fact that they were not campy compatible on their site, i could have damaged my crank, or myself. I would encourage people using Campagnolo compact cranks to not use a bash guard, as I doubt that there are any made specifically for those cranks at this time. Anyway, If I have some free time tomorrow I'll give the folks at cx world.com a call and let them know, hopefully they will make a campy compact specific version of their guard, as I have no ft derailleur braze ons on my frame and like my single ring set up with a guard.

Im bummed to have my cross bike out of comission for a while, as it is my primary ride for both exercize and commuting. back to the 3 speed for a while.

The campagnolo stuff is 110 bdc, but like you noticed, one bolt is a little off compared to most 110 cranks. They aren't exactly compatible with much of the rings/bash guards out there, ( I guess they only want you to use their stuff).

Its why I dont use campy cranks on my cross bikes on otherwise full campy drivetrain

glad this post came up! i was close getting those guards. do you think the same problem would happen with the campy 135 bcd?

so, if i wanted to go with a non-campy crankset for use with the rest of campy set up, what crankset would you guys recommend?

No problem with my 135 bcd guard on my campy veloce crank. (1x9)

So is one of the bolts on a campy chainring slightly offset or something? Such that you have to match the offset bolt up to make it fit? If so I wonder if the guard you bought has the same offset but you missed it? I dunno in either case that sux and I never heard of such a think. Pretty crappy thing for Campy to do if you ask me. Personally I would not have filed it but rather contacted cyclocrossworld about it but then I know how it is when you just want to ride your bike too.

I'd still contact cyclocross world and at least see if you are not the only one with such a problem.

Yes, some of them (including all UT ones I believe) are offset from the usual. This means you either have to buy their rings or rings from Stronglight or TA. It's not a big problem, except for things like bash guards, because no one would ruin their crank with nasty chainrings, would they?

Bringing this back up, I have a campy compact ut crank and want to change the rings.. anybody know of good options?

Stronglight or TA are your best options. XXCycle has them.
