Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. using a Trek XO-1 as an everyday ride?

I have an opportunity to get an 09 XO-1 for a decent price that I would like to use as my everyday, everything type bike. I'd have to swap out the knobbies for more of a street tire for a small cost, but that's it. How does the XO work on the street? Does the higher BB make it more twitchy than a road bike? I'm thinking the frame would be better for my 250+ pound frame vs. a 1.5/2.1 Trek for example. Can I run 28s on those rims or is 32 a better bet? I am also pondering the GF Lane, a cheaper (but brandy-new) option that is already road focused, or maybe the FX series...I don't know.

"Cyclocross wheels" are road wheels. You can use 21s if you want. There are hardly any cross bikes these days made with with especially high BBs. Cross bikes tend to have slightly more stable handling than road bikes.

i have a '11 XO-1 and so far I love it. I'm using it a my everyday ride as well. Assuming your wheels are the Bontrager SSR like i've got then yes you can run 28s no problem. I've got a pair of 25's on mine that work great.

My Major Jake has far more road miles on it than any other type. It is a wonderfully adaptive bike and really is great for just about anything except high speed off road descents. I have a tarmac and a TCR and while I find that the Kona does not feel as "snappy" as the other two, it hangs at speed and eats up the miles just as well as most other road bikes. I agree that it feels slightly less "twitchy" than my road racing bikes.

I don't really differentiate between cross wheels and road wheels. I have Ritchey WCS Protocols, Bontrager Race Lites, Ultegra/open pros, and Easton EA 90SLs that I swap in and out of all of my bikes without worrying about purpose. I suppose if I was really going to hammer it offroad, I would mount the ultegra/open pros. 23's are no problem but I STRONGLY prefer the smoother ride of 25s at 90-95 psi.

I have an 07 XO-1 and it also has more road miles than off road. My other bike is a mountain bike, so I can't really compare to a full on road bike, but I've had no problem keeping up with roadies. I've heard it said here before, that the engine is much more important than the bike. I've done everything on this bike - century, offroad, to simply just cruising around.

I ran 28 gatorskins on the stock Bontrager wheels (while I still had them) no problem. I never had much desire to go any smaller than that, though.

My friend I frequently ride with has a 11' XO-1 and he uses it for his every day ride with no issues. The only thing worth mentioning, depending on just what you want to do with it, the XO (the '11 anyways) has no braze ons. So no racks or fenders. If that's not an issue for you, get it. It's a very nice bike.
