I was set on buying a new '12 Crux Comp for use on paved and gravel/forest service roads but also have the opportunity to get a 2011 Crux Expert carbon for about the same price. They seem very similar but the carbon Crux appears to be the renaming of the Tri-cross Carbon and is different than the the alloy Crux'. There's a Walter Mittyish chance I'd take up 'cross racing, but that said, any opinions on which would be more enjoyable for a roadie who wants to ride both asphalt and dirt roads, with lots of hills I might add?

The carbon crux is indeed a tricross. Not that that is a bad thing per se, just ride them both and see which you prefer. The Alu version should feel snappier and more aggressive, while the carbon version should be a tad lighter, and more forgiving if you try to overcorrect. Also, due to the longer chainstays the carbon version will likely handle better at higher speeds, while the alu version should handle better at lower speeds (and probably climb better).

Both are good options. Get the one that fits your riding style better.

Thanks for that reply. All good advise. Sounds like the carbon with the longer stays might actually be safer descending a steep mountain pass even if it is slower on the ascent?

Still don't know what size is best (58 or 60) 'till I can test ride the bikes, but I do have a line on an '11 Crux Expert carbon for very low price and doubt I can afford an S-works. Never imagined getting a full carbon bike anyway so that's the dilemma between the new aluminum Crux or slightly used carbon.

Alright, finally bought the barely used 2011 Crux Expert carbon cx bike and love it! Seeing as how I'm not a serious racer (not a racer at all, in fact) the carbon Crux, a TriCross renamed, really was the best choice although I loved the look of the new 2012 Crux comp. Here's a couple photos. One at the start of the day and the other after a fun ride on some slushy back-roads.
