The thread with all the New England races has me depressed. We only have 4 here in Florida.

No doubt. I've got two more months of XC racing with some lofty goals in mind, yet my mind is wandering to those 55 minute CX pukefests. I'm also strangely looking forward to standing on the start line on those cold October mornings shivering my butt off, puffing out clouds, wherein the cold will be forgotten 10 seconds after the gun.

Yeah, but we're missing out on this:

Hey thatguy. I'm guessing you're talking about the Largo series. I saw there was a series in Sarasota last year. I was completely out of racing last year, but will be back out this winter. Ready for the pain.

Yeah, the Sarasota series was completely unsanctioned and uninsured. I doubt it will be back this year. There is talk of adding some North Florida races or spreading the dates around the state, but we'll see. I'm probably going to try for some of the Georgia races this year.

The clinics start here in a few weeks and the races are 6 weeks out. Can't wait, first year.

2 races in, 2 DNF's in my first year of Cat3. First one was due to physical issues, I was feeling terrible. The second due to mechanical malaise, my rear mech and hanger spontaneously combusted on lap 1. I still don't know what happened, though I did have a hard crash on the driveside during my warmup and practice. I've got a week and a bit to get things together for a double cross weekend, I'm hoping to finish both races.

Second lap of my first race of the season -- it was a glorious day for cyclocross -- mid 60's, light rain, wet and muddy course. I dismounted and cleared a double barrier, and was in the process of remounting. I threw my leg over the saddle, and stepped down on the right pedal and started pedaling. My foot slipped off the pedal while I was torquing the handle bars. My weight shifted forward, and I somehow went tumbling over the bars.

It was a completely unexceptional crash -- I've been racing cx for five years and have suffered far worse crashes. As soon as I stood up I noticed that my left shoulder was completely f--ed up. A trip to the ER and two x-rays confirmed what the doctor already knew -- fractured clavicle. Luckily, it was not serious enough to require surgery. Never the less, my arm is stuck in a sling for the next five to six weeks.

The sucky thing about it is that it seemed like such a harmless fall.

Riders be careful out there!

Going into my fifth season without health insurance. Careful is the only way. But damn, cyclocross is so much fun! Heal up soon! I'll be thinking about your experience at the start line on Sunday.
