    handups at UCI races?

so... I was told by a racer in VA that UCI and "serious" USAC races won't allow handups at all. I read the UCI cyclocross rules (found here) and it says nothing about handups- just about the pit which is for "changing bicycles and wheels."

we've stopped doing handups to train for UCI races, based on what that dude said, but I'm now questioning whether that's true. can anyone tell me whether this rule exists, and if so, where?

    thanks!

all bike maintenance, bikes, parts or tools need to be in the pit or on your person

and handups ? no one I ever seen needs a handup in a 1 hour race it is just gas it and go.

so ...like...is there a need for something to be handed up ? I don't follow here...

yeah, i think the need for handups this year has to do with 70 degree + temperatures for 60 min races. the hot stuff, it really kills ya. and this season it's been mad hot.

i guess i'm not asking for analysis of how to race. i'm asking a straightup rules question... is it legal to handup water- from the pit or otherwise- during a UCI Elite race?

In VA over the weekend, the 60 min A/B races were in warm and dry 75+ temps. Lots of bottles (and bottle handoff'rs) were in the designated feed zone/handup area. Officials encouraged the feed zone.
Sorry, can't help you with the UCI Elite rule.

In the local St Louis race yesterday (Bubba Memorial), the official made a point of saying there are no handups allowed. Handups will result in a DQ. So . . . there were no handups. However, several racers had water bottles on their bikes, given the 80F+ temp.

at 2 recent races (one UCI, one not) we were told no hand-ups. It was a really bad rule on the day it was in the 80's & very dusty for the A-race.

It's my understanding that they are not allowed. The course official informed us as much before each race this weekend. However, I was at a race (Agawam, MA, on a steamy August morning) where the course official annouced that hand-ups were going to be allowed- maybe it's up to the official.

But, c'mon...45 minutes, an hour maybe? Drink before and after.

ok, ok, y'all think handups are dumb. keep that in mind as the dudes taking 'em pass you.

    either way.

it seems this is not in fact a written rule but is something up to the discretion of the race organizer.
(and it was pointed out to me that plenty of folks took pizza or beer handups at Cross Vegas, which was UCI)
