I live in Connecticut and I'm really interested in racing cross this season. However, I'm finding it difficult to find out information about cross racing in the area. (YES I've used google, bike reg, cyclocross magazine's calender etc... I'm a newb not an idiot) I know it's early, but the only races I can find info about have some racing category attached and I'm trying to figure out how soon I have to be ready by.

Being new to bike racing I'm not really sure how a beginner would get started i.e. someone whose never raced a bike and where to find information.

So, I don't know if there's anyone from CT or New England here who might be able to clue me in on how to get started.

Race information will show up later in the year once the season gets going and bikereg will have a good amount of the races listed. It won't have all of them and I don't know of any 'master' list, but that with cx magazine calender should cover most of them for the NE region.

After that, it's just pay up, show up, and get ready to throw up.

I agree. There are not to many races posted up yet. Take a look at last years schedule with results and you can get a feel for what races will be in the NE area. There are typically the same races each year.

I know in previous years there were three locations very close to where I live (i.e. not more than 15 minutes driving) and I'm really excited to see if those are happening this year.

I'm in Boston and am looking to do my very first race of any kind (a cross race) this fall... yikes.

Are there any clinics or particularly noob oriented events around?

They have a calendar of events at the site. The best way to learn is simply to show up. You might want to just watch the first time, or if you feel like throwing yourself in there, buy a one-day license and enter the beginner's race.

The thing I'm really confused about is the lowest category at any local race is Cat 4. I'm not seeing any beginners categories. I've never raced road or otherwise so I'm not sure how the whole category thing works

Cat 5 is beginner for road, cat 4 is beginner for cross.

In its infinite wisdom, USAC has five categories for road, four for cross, and three for mountain bike.

Looks like there's races in Brockton and Gloucester pretty close to you if you have a car. I'll probably be throwing myself in one of those. Looking really forward to crashing with my friends before or after.

I did the race in Brockton it was pretty hard. 2 and a half hours of driving for 50 minutes of ass kicking. I didn't finish last... 30/37 with about 4DNFS so I consider that a victory. I have plenty of road skills but no off-road talent so I didn't go as hard as I could of because I was afraid of sliding out a lot. It was much more off-road then grass field.
