Critique me.. was I in the wrong, or just racing?

This was my second CX race, I'm in the green and white J's Bikes Jersey (#504). Right around 00:53 - 01:05, the guy filming says something like "Come on dude!" as I come around, slow a bit for traffic, clear a turn and accelerate away. What's your opinion, did I do something wrong? I'm looking to improve here, thanks.

Looks to me like you passed him, went inside of others and then went slower/braked harder in the turn than he wanted you to.
Most importantly, it's the first lap and you were in front of him.
If he's really got a problem with it - he needs to ride faster.
It is racing, afterall.

If you braked like that in a turn w/o traffic - then it might be a problem.

But, what do I know - I've only done 7 races.

i don't even know if he's referring to you....seems like it could've been someone to the side of him as well...either he slowed way down or you really accelerated....or both!

anyways, how did you do?

No clue, I usually just curse at my multiple screw ups. I guess he just thought you were doing something different, and said something when the turn didn't go as planned. No biggie, just cross - have a blast!

I'm the Colavita guy in the video. Nice job with the camera!

Your racing is fine. Don't worry about it. Things happen.

However, I am uncomfortable to see you wearing shorts. Please, at the very least, get some bibs for yourself.

Some people have their numbers pinned all wonky. They don't let that go here - they pull people from time to time at the start to fix it. If they miss the start too bad.

1st lap always bottlenecks at turns - everyone has to expect it. He may have just let out a comment without thinking about it. I wouldn't sweat it.

Looks like you took the inside line and had to brake due to a rider cutting from the outside in for a late apex. If anything it was that rider who was at fault for cutting you off. BUT that's the line everyone before you (and the guy following you) took, so it's understandable if he didn't expect you to be there. The guy behind you was probably just blindly following your wheel without thinking for himself. if he wanted to avoid slowing he should have gotten a better position earlier and taken the main line. So no, you weren't at fault and helmet cam man needs to pull his bibs out of his crack.

The only possible thing I see is that right at the one minute mark you drift a little wide and squeeze 416 closer to the tape than he might have liked, but I definitely wouldn't worry about it. You took a consistent line. The other guy shot past you cleanly in a tight spot. It looks like racing to me.

I'd just torn up one set of bibs and I wasn't about to wear my Santini's out to play in the mud. Part of my strategy was to blind those behind me with my white shining skin.

A lot of racers get annoyed when somebody passes them and immediately slows down right in front of them.

Weird, I know.

Since he has a youtube account, you could ask him personally why he barked at you.

I'm just now able to watch the vid. It was sort of clumsy how you got inside that DRT guy, then had to brake hard. You should have gone wide like the guy who passed you on the right. Camera dude's reaction was pretty mild and understandable, I wouldn't stress over it for a second.

The Griffifth park fight on day one was in the Elite race - I have not seen any fights in our lowly 4's.

i had a fight break out in front of me in the Granada Hills race. 1st lap. the instigator was the owner of BH bikes. he jumped off his bike after exchanging words with someone he made a bad attempt at passing, and shoved them off their bike.

you need to get more aggressive. You gave up a ton of spots at the beginning. don't be afraid to throw your body into things. When spring summer comes, get some crit racing going. If you are going to race cross, you have to get used to having people all over you and don't give anything away for free.

its a good video for showing how to get shot to the back of the pack. They guy should have "duded" his friend to his left, 607, who he should have shot around at the first possible chance. 607 carried almost no speed through the corners and was overall slow. The camera POV rider seemed fine hanging on his wheel. If I was stuck behind these two I would have taken any chance (ride through weeds and tall grass) to get around these guys. The camera rider is also fond of riding the inside of corners and slowing considerably. Long winded answer of saying, you should have passed him anyway possible earlier!
