Raleigh Bicycles Sponsors Historic Two Days of DCCX
Raleigh Bicycles has joined DCMTB as the title sponsor for this year’s new, two-day DCCX cyclocross race.
With Raleigh’s generous support, Washington, D.C.’s only ‘cross race will have a new mad-dash time trial-style cyclocross race on Saturday, October 20. The full slate of traditional, gut-wrenching cyclocross racing over cobblestones, grass, stairs and off-camber hills takes place on Sunday, October 21.
Registration on BikeReg.com goes live this Sunday, September 23, at 8 p.m. for the TT and 8:30 p.m. for the ‘cross race. Bikereg.com sponsors the Super 8 series of races, of which both the DCCX time trial and cyclocross race are a part. Both events will count toward series rankings.
DCCX, one of the biggest races on the East Coast, also joined USA Cycling’s prestigious Cyclocross National Calendar, a grouping of the top domestic events.
For the sixth straight year the race will take place at the historic Armed Forces Retirement Home right in the heart of the nation’s capital. And once again Family Bike Shop, which sells a full suite of Raleigh bikes, and Terra Landscape Solutions, which is preparing the course, are back as major sponsors.
Also new this year is the involvement of Staples Corner Liquors in Crofton, Maryland, which is stepping in as the race’s major refreshment supplier, with the added support from Dogfish Head Alehouse and Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar.
For racers, the biggest change this year is the addition of the time trial on Saturday. Racers will start in mini-waves of three, separated by one minute from those before and after them. The number of laps ranges from one for the youngest juniors to five for elite men. The laps, which are a bit extended, will include the same combinations of barriers, tight corners, stairs and eye-watering, power hills.
Results from that event will count both towards the Super 8 series and, in part, towards starting order on Sunday. A separate registration is needed for each race.
Raleigh’s involvement this year helps boost the race to a new level. The Kent, Washington-based bike maker has an entire new range of cyclocross bicycles out for 2013, including elite carbon frames, disc-brake bikes in carbon, and ever-classy steel. For the iconoclast there are singlespeed or three-speed ‘cross options.
Raleigh’s representatives will be at the race and will have bikes that can be drooled over on Saturday, and demo’ed on Sunday. Check out its website at www.raleighusa.com.
Family Bike Shop, the lead sponsor of the DCMTB bicycle team, is a longtime dealer of Raleigh bikes. Jonathan and Sarah Seibold, the Crofton, Maryland-shop’s owners, were cited as one of the top sellers of Raleigh bikes in 2010, and connected Raleigh with DCMTB.
For the West Coast company, DCCX provides an opportunity for it to show-off race-ready bikes at a race famous for a course that is combination of fast, tricky corners, ever-changing obstacles (look out for a new set of stairs this year) and gut-check power sections. Back again this year are the tandem, Li’l Belgians’ kids event and rookie races — and the ever-popular, raucous race-day party.
Other contributing sponsors to this year’s race include: DrinkMore Water, DC Dutch Club, Nuts About Granola, J.R. Kuzma Painting and Joe Foley Photography.
