new "racer" questions

Hi all,

Getting into mountain bike racing this summer, trying some longer distances. This has been my winter fitness savior, as it keeps me motivated and biking helps me remain injury free.

In the fall, I would like to try some cyclocross races, I don't care if I finish last/not concerned with time. Rather, want to gather experience.

The local 30 minute races have beginner category lumped in with lowest cat.

Questions:

-I have a 29er mountain bike, no end bars, would this be allowed on course?

-is it insane to enter such a race with a 29er?

-are most cyclocross racers decent road racers already?

-are the environments cut-throat more laid back and friendly to beginners?

Thanks for any advice.

Benny

Not sure about your area but here's my experience from my first season this past winter:

Questions:

-I have a 29er mountain bike, no end bars, would this be allowed on course? Yes mountain bikes are allowed.

-is it insane to enter such a race with a 29er? Not insane. There were several in the lower categories riding them in both local series as well as some fast guys that would ride them for some courses in the faster races.

-are most cyclocross racers decent road racers already? Most of the guys around here were road racers but I don't know how fast in comparison since I haven't ever raced a road race. I'm a cat 2 MTB rider and was able to finish top half in the 4/5 races.

-are the environments cut-throat more laid back and friendly to beginners? One thing I loved about it was how "fun" these races were. I always have a good time racing but these races are the best. Maybe the Pro/1/2 races are different but the 4/5 races I did and the 3/4 races I watched all seemed pretty laid back even up towards the front.

Thanks for any advice.

Benny
