They left the 'e' off Tok 7.13.02

There was some good news this morning as we noticed Betoven, Helga's sick golden retriever was in much better spirits and was walking and wagging his tail more than usual. We watched him eat lots of food making up for about a week with much at all. He still looked skinny and a bit weak, but much more alive than the previous couple of days. I made a big Spanish omelet and ate with Helga. John showed up a little later to try out his electric sander he got for his birthday.l I wiped out my tent and cleaned a bit of dirt off the outside. I also cleaned and lubed up my bikes important parts for my next journey. Helga was telling me about some of the improvements she plans to make around the house. I offered to help paint a section of the front and she set me up with pain and brushes. Tuscan Olive was the color. It looked nice against the white trim of the windows and still seemed to blend into the natural setting. I got John involved in some paining when he seemed bored with other activities. Then he used his sander to clean up a section of the unpainted wood. I was happy to contribute some help for Helga. I also thought about how much work it must be to maintain a hostel/bed & breakfast like this. Since I'd been thinking about doing something like this in the future, I might as well get my hands dirty around here, otherwise it's all just talk. I suppose I should try walking the walk. After paining, I got a wood splinter in my thumb, one of those annoying ones that you think you can dig out, but all attempts fail and end up leaving you with a swollen aching thumb after being a pin cushion. Earlier in the day I called my dad and filled him in on how things had been going. We had a pleasant conversation. Helga made some rice to go with the spicy thai pork we had leftover from last night. She also made an awesome fruit salad. We decided to get a little experimental with it and add coconut milk that ended up bringing the salad to a whole new level of deliciousness. Coconut milk rules! Vince and Jeff stopped back over and talked to us during dinner. Vince informed me his grandmother was out of town in Dawson, but his mom was checking on another contact. Before dinner, Helga had some visitors from Tetlin, a native community accessible by plane and boat and ice road in the winter, but still relatively isolated as far as native communities go. Bill had some history working with the community so I assume that is how there is a connection today. I don't remember their names, but they were very nice to talk to. They spoke about their fishing work and how they use their gillnets to trap large whitefish then pill them up and pack them. Helga suggested I might want to help and they said they might need help so I actually might get to go out there to Tetlin tomorrow to help them pull up and pack whitefish. I am excited for the possibility, but I wonder if it will materialize.

Peace and thanks for reading

Dave
