8.12.02 Cassiar Mountains, Jade City, and tough headwinds

It rained all night last night. So much for drier days. But my new tarp performed well. We started off in powerful headwinds cycling through a valley surrounded by tall mountains with a few visible veins of and patches of snow at the peaks. We've entered the Cassiar Mountain Range. After about 11 miles we made it to Jade City. My legs were hurting from the combination of inclines and strong headwinds. We filled up on coffee and ate some oatmeal. A few RVers asked us questions about our trips. We moved on through the mountains and took a rest about 13 miles later at a stop. The Cassiar Mountains were spectacular. At one point we were riding down the road completely surrounded by mountains. For most of the day, we had strong headwinds which made pedaling a lot tougher. Just before our last break of the evening, we spotted a large female moose feeding down by a lake. She was close enough to appreciate her size, but too far for a good photo. Finally we reached the first unpaved section of the Cassiar. We'd been thinking about it for most of the second half of the day, wondering just how tough it would be. The road itself was fine. The fact that it was the end of a long day of cycling in headwinds and finishing up on inclines made it a little tough. We found a water source and a good place to set up camp. I cooked up some noodles with a can of stewed tomatoes and man was it delicious. Thomas and I had some good conversation and joked while we ate. This morning was hard on me and this evening was tough on Thomas, but we ended the day in good spirits with smiles. Tomorrow we have about 20 or so miles to Dease Lake. We are looking forward to a hot breakfast at a cafe. (62 miles)

    Peace

    Dave
