9.3.02 Ferry ride back to Prince Rupert

I packed up my tent and went over towards some of the main shops in town to look for a hot breakfast. I ran into Ross, from Australia, who I met on the ferry ride over to Haida Gwaii. He had spent most of his time in the Southern areas of the Charlottes including a 4-day trip to the Gwaii Hannas, a forest reserve in the Southern half of the Queen Charlotte Islands. He told me this highlight of his trip and I told him a bit about my experiences around North Beach. We sat down in a nearby café and I had a hot expensive breakfast. Last night, I noticed my seat was broken. One of the metal pieces that the seat post fastens to broke. Luckily I won’t be doing much riding before I hit the bike shop in Prince Rupert. I met Christina outside the café and we rode to the ferry terminal, got our tickets and put on our bikes. The ferry ride was pleasant. A 6 and a half hour journey back to Prince Rupert. The day was mostly sunny at both ports with rain in between. Sheila, from Ireland, was on board and came by to chat a bit. Later on, Christine, Ross and I got into pretty deep conversation about karma, religion, and politics while munching on rich chocolate chip cookies. We arrived at Prince Rupert at about 5:30pm and it was raining. I said goodbye to Christine but I’d be seeing her on Friday’s ferry to Port Hardy. I rode into town and stopped by the bike shop just in case there was someone still there. It turned out there was, so I bought a new seat. Unfortunately, they were all out of men’s saddles, so I had to buy a woman’s. After riding on it, I figured there wasn’t much difference. I went to the Java House to check my email and then went to Zorba’s for a good East Indian meal. Again, the meal was phenomenal. I cruised over to the Java House again to give Kelly a call and she told me the bad news. She wasn’t going to be able to cycle Vancouver Island with me because of cost. I told her it was OK and she assured me we’d have a good time down in her part of the Island when I got there. Now that I’ll be cycling the island solo, this opens up opportunities for me to visit with Servas hosts. I got on a computer and emailed a few letting them know I’d be in the area. Before leaving the café, I met a German cyclist named Martin. He had been traveling around Western Canada and Alaska for the past 3 months. We talked for a bit and then I took off to look for a place to camp as it was getting dark. I found the perfect place behind the Prince Rupert Senior’s Club building. It was out of sight and away from the city noise. (9 miles)

Peace

Dave

If I'm not mistaken, those pics were taken across the road from Gracie's, were they not? Did you stay at Gracie's? Did you happen to meet Fernie?

It's a beautiful place. Thanks for the pics....brings back memories.

It doesn't ring a bell. I camped out behind the local hostel. The name slips my mind at the moment. You are very welcome for the pics. It is my pleasure to share the experience.

Peace

Dave
