10.29.02 Newport, Puerto Escondito and Toledo

I woke up early and had to force myself to sleep longer. When I did wake up, I went outside and enjoyed a nice ocean view. Last night, Mark invited me over to breakfast at 9am and said I could come over earlier for coffee. Around 8am, I walked over and grabbed a coffee and said good morning to Mark who was starting to cook breakfast. We talked for a bit about my trip as I watched him prepare fruit, baked pear, and a delicious smoked salmon and potato frittata. I sat down to eat this wonderful meal with 3 other couples, one who I coincidentally happened to meet at the Boiler Bay lookout. My trip seemed to be the center of attention during the meal but I didnít mind talking about it. As we finished breakfast and our conversation, we watched the sun shine outside. Eventually we all headed out to enjoy the day. I rode down to Newport city center and along the local bike route and ended up near the Yaquina Bay Bridge. I took some photos and then stopped by the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse for a photo. Next, I rode over to the harbor in Yaquina Bay and checked out the strip of gift shops, restaurants, and tourist traps along the water. There were sea lions basking on floating docks, barking at one another and competing for sleeping space. I took some photos and then walked along the boat docks where some of the local fishing boats that go up to Alaska are parked. I went into a shop and bought a ball of hemp and a new leather hacky sack. After my purchases, I snacked on a nice bowl of Moís famous clam chowder dockside while watching a guy fish for Dungeness crab with a cool looking trap attached to a fishing rod. I rode back to downtown Newport and found Puerto Escondito, a Mexican restaurant my friend Juan runs with his family. I met Juan in Alaska on one of the fishing boats I worked on, the Golden Pisces. He was surprised to see me. I told him I made it here from Alaska by bike. He told me another guy, Crispin, who worked on the same boat was around and I told Iíd like to go try to find him after I spent a couple hours at the library. I cruised over to the library and got some journal entering done. I went back to see Juan and we drove to Toledo, a nearby town just inland from Newport, to try to find Crispin, but didnít have any luck. We went back to the restaurant and talked for a while. Juan treated me to a tasty Mexican meal cooked by his family. I had pork fajitas. I said goodbye to Juan and pedaled back towards Agate Beach. I stopped at the grocery store and got some ingredients for chocolate chip cookies. When I arrived at the B&B, Mark and Cindy werenít home, so I started making the cookies, hoping to surprise them. When they got back, they seemed delighted to have cookies laid out for them, fresh from the oven. We enjoyed the treats with milk and I spoke with Mark a bit before sitting down to read the paper. Outside the night was clear and windy. After doing a bit of writing, I went to bed. (18 miles)

Peace

Dave
